Duff-e Posted September 27, 2004 Report Posted September 27, 2004 nah...heat really isnt that bad for most modern processors....only if you start fucking with the voltages most chips made ~1 yr just shut down from heat yea its most likely your PSU....and a 300-350w will do you just fine as long as you buy a quality brand that has failsafe overheating protection (ie an of the higher quality antecs, fortron etc) DONT cheap out on a power supply....3 of the last 10 computers i fixed had dead powersupplies and all were generic $20 400 watt brands. curman Posted September 27, 2004 Author Report Posted September 27, 2004 Wait hang on, I had it wrong this is the PSU with my case: http://www.marscomputer.net/product.php?id=2611&ax=1 Now on the back I have a switch that says either 115 or 230, Right now its on 115.. :/ I don't get it D: Quote
Duff-e Posted September 27, 2004 Report Posted September 27, 2004 you silly goose that means 115 and 230 VOLTS. basically if you live in europe 230 and in north america 115....but that shouldnt have any effect on anything (because if it was 230 your computer just wouldnt start) Quote
curman Posted September 27, 2004 Author Report Posted September 27, 2004 Then...how come I am overclocking if that says its 350 watts? ;/ Quote
Duff-e Posted September 27, 2004 Report Posted September 27, 2004 * i dont think you're clear on what overclocking is (usually). overclocking is when someone wants to make their computer faster so they set the front side bus higher or change the voltage core in order to force the processor to work faster then the stock speed it was sold at. you keep using "overclocked" like it was a symptom of the problem you're having. (continued from my last post) while that PSU isnt great, it should def maintain what you have there now it sounds like you're having a heat problem.....what i would recommend doing is going into your BIOS and setting the fsb to whatever setting is right below the current. i dont know if your bios fsb is controlled by each individual mhz or like most 66-133-266-333 etc etc set it lower and see if it still crashes. if it doesnt crash anymore then get that bitch RMA'd asap (assuming you have the stock cooler with the 3500+, the stock heatsink SHOULD be able to maintain the processor....so dont go out and buy a new heatsink....because its not your fault, its a defect) (fsb for your processor should be like 400mhz or something....look it up if unsure) another good way to troubleshoot hardware problems is to just turn everything to the lowest possible settings and see if it still crashes, then slowly turn everything back on (hence finding the problem). btw when your computer crashes...is it only in game or does it happen when you're just sitting looking at the desktop? curman Posted September 27, 2004 Author Report Posted September 27, 2004 Tech support basically told me not to fuck around with the BIOs unless im posotive what I'm doing.. Quote
Duff-e Posted September 27, 2004 Report Posted September 27, 2004 the bios is absolutely nothing to be afraid of (with a few exceptions). you're going to have to go in there one day....whether its to turn off your onboard sound or change your boot device to reformat. when your computer starts up just hit the button that it says will take you to your bios (often referred to as setup). the keys used to get in are usually - esc, the Fkeys - del key - a combination of keys. once you are in, just look under all the sub menu's for something that talks about a front side bus or "FSB". just lower the numbers from whatever is already there to maybe 10 mhz less (remember, this part depends on the bios, it could decrease many different ways...from 400-333-266 or mhz by mhz) if you think you changed something by mistake that you shouldnt have, just hit esc and dont save the changes....it will be like you never did anything.
