Sentura Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 if you're going to sli, get 8800GTs instead of 8800GTS'. much less heat generation and much better performance. for a processor, the q6600 is good, but for now i'd wait until they release something better, or better versions of it (like they did with the c2d procs). ram, get corsair xms2 dominators, theyre the best of ddr2 if you cant afford to buy ddr3, though the xms3s arent bad either if you plan on using ddr3, and a cheaper alternative than xms3 dominators. any additional cooling you can get on your motherboard will come in handy for any setup, so scout wisely when choosing. that is all. Cybbe Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Get a 360. It's cheaper. But the available games are halved, for double the price. I love my 360 though~ But I'd still say he should stick with a computer if he wants to game. Especially considering he might want to play FPS's. (HL2++ ?) Quote
KungFuSquirrel Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Get a 360. It's cheaper. what have you done??? this post funnier if we had an "oh the horror" or "take cover" smiley Quote
skdr Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 I don't see any reason to wait when it comes to hardware. If you need it NOW, buy it NOW. If you don't need it, then wait. Quote
Gorion Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 a couple of things first; nvidia will be releasing their new series prolly around april. or as the rumour says February, so at least wait till february. (you won't even have a choice, cause the G92 based cards are always selled out, lol ) Then, nvidia has different 8xxx series, those based on the G8x core and those based on the G92 core. the G92 core has 256bit bandwidth for memory (GTX/*old*GTS has 384bit bandwidth and there for, 320/640/768mb memory). Also it has a smaller core, so it produces less heat, has a higher clockrate, faster memory and allot of tweaks. The difference between that bandwidth (256 vs 384), you will only feel it with high res (1680*1050 and upwards) and with AA on. Then the other thing, there is the GTS and the GTS. 1 is based on the G8x card and the other is based on G92. the G92 is (allot) better. cause it has more shaders (128 vs 112) + newer core. you can regonize this GTS by the amount of memory (512 or 1024mb). anway nvidia sucks so get an ati card plz (HD3870!!) D3ads Posted December 12, 2007 Author Report Posted December 12, 2007 I don't really need a full upgrade yet imho, just a newer graphics card and some extra ram, I've found loads of 6800 cards on ebay for next to nothing: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BFG-GeForce-6800- ... dZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XFX-Geforce-6800- ... dZViewItem I'm really not going to grumble with paying £8-16 for a newer graphics card, with that I can run D3/Q4 and F.E.A.R. on max settings and HL2, which will enable me to edit Source if I decide to bite the bullet Can even run newer games with that, just on lower settings which doesn't bother me too much. st0lve Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 How little money do you have? I mean like when I got my first paycheck this autumn, I checked the possibilities for an upgrade (not needed at all, just wanted more of a solid workstation), which included new processor, 2gb ram and a new gfx card, and it was about the same price as an 360. So I ended up on a 360 and I haven't though it was wrong for a second! (mainly cause I gave up on game dev., I don't think it's funny anymore) Quote
NormySan Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 I would wait untill i could buy a totaly new rig. The prices right now on computer parts are a dream! You can get a brand spanking new computer for a very reasonable amount of money (well, atleast here in sweden you can). You're rig sounds very old, you don't say what kind of CPU you have... My OLD rig had a AMD 3200+, 1gig ram, and ati 9700 that is way better than a gf4. If you could get any of those 6800s for a very low price go ahead and buy but don't go to the store and get a new set of ddr1 ram sticks or an AGP card. NOT worth it. Even if the "newer" games like hl2, q4, fear etc will run better they won't run anywhere near like they will on a new computer. Quote
Mr. Happy Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 So you have a choice of spending 30euro now or a thousand euro later. I'd probably spend the 30 now and wait until summer of next year. Prices will drop, you should be able to make back the 30euro in the 6-7 months, tech will improve, and your current pain will be lessened. You obviously want to upgrade now, but there is no reason to and its better to wait. so put a bandaid on and get surgery later. Quote
