Skjalg Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 I think you can find two, or maybe three of the exact same topic with ~6+ pages in both. Search is right next to FAQ and Memberlist. Quote
NormySan Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 I don't do much modeling and i can't boast about having any skills in it either, but when i have played around some with it i found maya to be the tool that worked best for me. I have never been able to export a model to source tough, i've tried everyting! So if you are going to do source models don't go maya I did try 3ds max in the past but i could never relly get my head around it. I have been playing some with XSI to, not much but i like it so far. And it seams to be a very good tool for poly modeling. Quote
zaphod Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 I use Maya, but I'm certain I could just as easily do everything I need to do in Max if I needed to. Learn both, then pick the one you are most comfortable with. Quote
2d-chris Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 I prefer using Maya, that being said I've spent most of my modeling time in it. Also I was shown allot of tricks while working at a game studio, kind of helpful having some great artists there to help Maya for me is more logical and I love the interface, it reminds me somewhat of UED or Hammer where as 3dm is a jumble of complicated icons and deep menues I get lost in. Now they are both owned by the same company I can't see either Maya or Max losing popularity, they both do the same job in slightly different ways. For the record I think maya's official demoreel kicks max's ass Quote
Pericolos0 Posted May 26, 2008 Report Posted May 26, 2008 Maya for me is more logical and I love the interface, it reminds me somewhat of UED or Hammer where as 3dm is a jumble of complicated icons and deep menues I get lost in. haha thats exactly what maya is to me. Both packages are as good anyways. Because they are so customiseable they are only as good as you make them for you. Thats why im so comfortable in max and lost in maya. Would have been the other way around if i started with maya. Quote
Inveramsay Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 I've been using XSI for a week or so and have managed to produce a good bunch of plants etc. Really easy to get a hang of, especially if you go with the free mod tool and watch the two hours or so of videos explaining the basics and how to compile and build a basic level in hammer. That the mod tool sucks is a completely different story though, which mainly comes down to bugs and limitations of it. I can't say if it is better or worse than the competition but at least it is easy enough to learn the basics in. Quote
Ascard Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 I've been using XSI for a week or so and have managed to produce a good bunch of plants etc. Word through the grapevine is that XSI is the king for organic modelling, I Can't imagine it being worth the price tag though I love Maya, I'd marry maya and have subdiv babies together ^^ I do really like the pelt mapping of Max but you can get the same functionality out of headus UvLayout, though that is secondary software to support the already more expensive software. For modeling I think max is easier to jump into but Maya has a better workflow, customisability and layout for me personally, In any case learning one teaches you alot about the other too. You can't really go wrong I thinks Quote
