dux Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 This is probably suited to the Engine Area of the forum but oh well. What Engine is COD4 and previous COD titles on? I know that COD1 was Quake 3 but are they still using Quake 3 as a basis for COD even now? You can get crap loads out of an engine with it's source code and constant upgrades so I'm thinking it's still a big ass modified Quake 3? Quote

I was under the impression that both CoD3/4 were built on the DOOM 3 engine. I could be wrong, though. Quote
insta Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I'm pretty sure Cod2 was built on a heavily modified Q3 engine. The shadows atleast reminded me of Q3. Quote
-HP- Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I thought CoD2 used Doom3 engine... Quote

Sa74n Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 cod2 was certainly NOT doom3 engine. according to wikipedia they were using an inhouse engine. my guess is that it was still based on q3 code though. edit: well obviously they are using their own engine for cod4 too. Quote
KungFuSquirrel Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 COD2 was a proprietary engine in the same way that HL1/HL2 is a proprietary engine. I imagine COD4 is an extension of that technology. They still use Radiant as far as I know. (feel free to correct me, IW types ) 3 was built off the Big Red One branch of the tech, not COD2's, and probably more heavily re-written than the others since Treyarch doesn't believe in PCs. Quote
e-freak Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Theyr version of inhouse differs from alan wake :/ Tbs: They were using id Tech for all Games until CoD3 but had it modified to a point of no recognition afaik. The base was still quake 3 but rewritten in most parts (at least I think I remember something like this from an interview on the engines capabilty) but I may confuse with some other title here (maybe some part of the MoH-Series or some Unreal2-based game) Quote
Furyo Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Last I checked, there had been this mini edrama when BadMofo posted they were not using Unreal 3 but an in house engine for CoD4.... Quote
Algor Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I don't think anyone suspected them to be using UE3... The engine is looking pretty nice though in the last video, didn't know they had real time lighting in the sense that the sunlight could be changed in real time. Still hard to tell how many actual polys are being pumped versus trickery (noticing lots of masked textures for the broken brick walls). There's all the talk of graphical enhancements in the interview, but I'd be more curious if the AI was made something other than a dumb-as-nails script fest. Quote
