D3ads Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Remember awhile ago that a single-player horror mod called Afraid Of Monsters was released for Half-Life? It was flawed but quite a cool piece of work that was genuinely fightening at times and drew inspiration from Silent Hill among other things. Well because the author at the time was inexperienced (believe it or not he was 12-14 years old when he made the original), his vision of AOM didn't come out quite how he wanted it, so with the help of another to sort out new code, they took AOM and remade it. This isn't just a straight remake though, the original AOM had just under 20 maps, this one has 53 and this is because there are several different non-linear paths through the game that will result in one of 4 possible endings, making this a perfect game to replay at your leisure. There are no more Half-Life reskins, models have been replaced and new monsters have been added. There are also new weapons but you can only carry one of each type, so if you're carrying a knife you can swap it for a hammer and back again, same goes for pistols, smgs, shotgun and revolvers. To add more tension to the mix, the flashlight now uses batteries that you must find hidden around the various environments, if you run out it will recharge at a slow rate and will only last 30 seconds, so make sure you find those batteries, every last item and bullet in this game counts! All the old maps are in there with added improvements and new, never before seen areas with new puzzles as well. Check it out: http://mods.moddb.com/7579/afraid-of-monsters-dc/ Works with both Steam and WON. For reference, information on the original mod can also be found here: http://mods.moddb.com/6145/afraid-of-monsters/ Quote
dux Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Awesome! That mod made me jump so many times it was rediculous. Quote
Quakis Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 When I played and review the original (here) the mod had a lot of potential but lacked quite some things and had some faults. I'll have to check this one out later, but it looks like the annoying type of dark-maps will be here once again judging from shots. If it has the atmosphere of the original then it should be worth it. Quote
MJ Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 is this the mod with the speedy zombies? think i played it Quote

The pitch black hospital is back, although the interior has been revamped a lot with brighter colours so it's easier to see where you're going. There are some other dark areas too, you'll need your flashlight a fair bit. Watch out for the things that replace the alien slaves, they WILL make you jump Quote
Uragan_Lex Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I done it on Hard difficulty level... it was unforgettable horror adventure -_-" Quote
PogoP Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Got a bit annoying. I ran out of battery for my flashlight and just sat in the corner cowering, waiting for it to recharge. Then I got to a certain point where you climb down a ladder and when I did so, it killed me. =/ Quote
Uragan_Lex Posted November 6, 2007 Report Posted November 6, 2007 PogoP - on the ladder you need to go down a little and watch back - there a entry to floor above. Quote

Best thing to do is keep the flashlight on only when you need it, if you come to an area whereby you have enough light to see.. switch it off! I finished the game last with 100 batteries You get a nice surprise upon completing all four endings... Quote
