I would recommend it as it'll save you lots of back-and-forth between tutorial sites written by people who don't have a full grasp of the tools

If you do think video tutorials are the way to go, I'd snag the 3DBuzz selection on HL2. I can speak fairly highly for what I've seen of their productions in the past and their HL2 content is completely free. You'll need to register for the site, but that's another game you can buy this holiday season. :)

Speaking of books made by Valve, I just ordered Phil Co's book on level design, which contains UnreadEd and not Hammer, but principles and lessons are what I'm after.
