I enjoyed it despite the rough visuals and the gameplay not going above and beyond. It's simple and heavily steeped in the Diablo design but I don't think anyone can be caught off guard by that knowing even a bit about the developer's history. I'll probably pick it up a little after release once a few friends have gotten around to grabbing it and it's been patched up.

it doesnt look like shit, especially not for an MMO

Not really an MMO. Sure there can be hundreds of players in town, but when you go out to the dungeons, it's only a party of 8 max, and no one else. Also there isn't a large world to explore -- it's all rather confined dungeons. Instancing + small areas doesn't really make it much of an MMO. So they could have afforded to up the graphics without lagging people out too badly since the only time they see everyone is in town, where speed isn't really an issue since there's no combat.

I am getting the feeling this won't live up to expectations and I fear the buzz is wearing off in general due all the other bigs games came out in the last month or so...

Me too :(

Been looking forward to this game for so long, but I'm gonna have to accept its going to be average at best.

Got my beta key yesterday and I'm installing it now. Although I initially thought this was a great concept for a game, I haven't heard anything good about it since it went beta.

Many of the complaints (particularly on Slashdot) seem to be about the business model with real world products advertised in game, a subscription system and the game sending information to the developers.

I'm still keen to try it out though and make up my own opinion.

Overall it was better than I had expected and I still think it has potential (I only played to lvl 3 and I'm pretty sure the beta closes on Friday). I thought the environments were very detailed for an mmrpg, the downside to that is the heavy instancing. The environments feel very linier and boxed in, certainly doesn't feel like you're freely roaming around a post apocolyptic London.

I think to really judge the gameplay you'd have to experience the teamwork involved in a mid-high lvl dungeon.

High lvl caps in games irritate me too (lvl50 in HGL). I can't see any point in them other than to get people spending ridiculous amounts of time in game.

I'm the opposite. I hate it when Lvl 20 is max b/c you can get there quickly in other games, and then what? At least with Hellgate you know that with that high level cap the monsters will get really tough. Plus it allows you to change your mind if you screw up your char build w/o having to start over.
