Hourences Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 I just announced/launched a whole number of new things. _________________________________________________________________ My new book: The Hows and Whys of the Games Industry - http://book.hourences.com # Intended for amateurs who wish to ‘break into’ the games industry and who are looking for additional information. It’s also for those who are yet undecided on whether or not to pursue a career in the games industry. # Aims to provide the reader with a honest and objective discourse about the games industry, its pros and cons, and why one would, or would not, want to be active within this industry. # Interviews with over twenty industry professionals on how they got in, what they like, and what they dislike about the games industry. # Attempts to provide the reader with answers to some of the most common questions beginners have; such as how much one can expect to earn, the best way to apply to a studio, and what to expect during a job interview. The book will provide the reader with plenty of tips about what to look for when searching for a job. # Illustrated with exclusive concept art by Romano Molenaar . Scheduled for release around Nov-Dec _________________________________________________________________ New Community website - http://community.hourences.com # New UE3 tutorials, including two materials tutorials on water (indoor and outdoor) http://book.hourences.com/tutorialsue3water.htm http://book.hourences.com/tutorialsue3water2.htm http://book.hourences.com/tutorialsue3m ... ssions.htm http://book.hourences.com/tutorialsue3mated.htm http://book.hourences.com/tutorialsue3mated2.htm http://book.hourences.com/tutorialsue3mated3.htm Plus of course all my existing tutorials. # A job section I launched a European and Northern American job section focussing solely on level and environment jobs. http://book.hourences.com/jobsindex.php http://book.hourences.com/jobsindex2.php Feel free to report any job openings Quote
Rick_D Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 nice stuff man, loving the job openings Quote
-HP- Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Very nice dude! I ordered you'r previous book of Level Design, and I'll definitely order this one as well! I love the jobs sections and I love even more the tuts section! I'll definitely try out UnreadEd for UT3 as soon as the full game comes out! Thanks for contributing so much for this kick ass community man! Btw, Is it correct calling it a "community" if there's no interactivity with it's users? Like for instance, a forum? Quote
Furyo Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Many thanks for all your hard work Sjoerd. It's appreciated by more people than you'd think Quote
Zacker Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Cool with the new book Hourences, I hope it's as good as the first one! Maintaining a job section on your site sounds as a lot of work in the long run though. Quote
Psyshokiller Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Looking foreward to get this book. You really deserve applause for all your dedication to the community. Quote
FrieChamp Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 Looks like you're building yourself an empire, way to go Hourences! Quote
-HP- Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 btw, I hope the pages of this book are better than the previous one, the first pages of the book started coming out a few days after I get it! Quote
Hourences Posted October 16, 2007 Author Report Posted October 16, 2007 That sucks and shouldnt happen. Youre the first one who has that problem as far as I am aware off. It might been a one off bad copy. Thanks for the comments: ) And yeah its a community site, even without user interaction. Everything on the site is meant for the community so... A UE3 sound tutorial next month I hope, and after that I hope to finally get into real level design again with UT3 Quote
e-freak Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 OK, now I know what I wish for christmas Quote

Sa74n Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 hourences IS the games industry. great work, mate. you're helping shitloads of people with your tuts, books and your continued effort to share your knowledge. Quote
channie Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 I sincerely hope you've kept in mind all the critics that were made to your first book, to increase the quality of this one. Quote
Hourences Posted October 17, 2007 Author Report Posted October 17, 2007 Oh certainly. I am still an independent author but I try hard to make it as good as I can. Therefore the book has been nearly entirely rewritten by a native English speaking person, proofreaded four times by four different people, and because it's a black and white print it will also be a lot cheaper, thus I have a lot more flexibility regarding the lay out. Oh and I plan for a LD v2 in a year or two years time. Thanks for the comments:) Quote
