FrieChamp Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 This is the ultimate example of how gameplay suffers when all the work goes into making everything look pretty. There is nothing fun about it, so forget the online leaderboards and don't worry about unlocking a few dragons in the stable or gunning for a high score. Forget Lair entirely. Source Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/lair ... lk=topslot http://www.metacritic.com/games/platfor ... air?q=lair Sounds like something went horribly, horribly wrong there. Ginsengavenger, care to comment? Quote
Mazy Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Aye, the reviews have been absolutely abysmal. Was planning on picking it up, but not I'm not that sure anymore, sounds like a Sixaxis nightmare :G Haven't played Warhawk enough anyway, and it seems similar enough to Lair Quote
Taylor Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Same for Heavenly Sword, Blue Dragon and Folklore. Is someone going to make a next-gen game that's actually fun? Quote
Mazy Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 I donno, Heavenly Sword seems decent enough. Gameplay is very much God of War, which isn't a bad thing at all. Also the cutscenes are just drop dead gorgeous. Plus the reviews for Heavenly Sword have been pretty good so far. Not a 9/10 title, but 7s and 8s are also good Quote
ShaDoW Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Same for Heavenly Sword, Blue Dragon and Folklore. Is someone going to make a next-gen game that's actually fun? Blue Dragon is great. But it doesn't surprise me the American reviews it gets are bad. Blue Dragon is a great JRPG, and many people can't appreciate those kind of games. Mainly because they're not used to them. Which is why its doing excellent in Japan even though the 360 sales aren't everything they should be over there. JRPG's almost a genre on their own really. The demo doesn't do it justice though. Taylor Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Edit: I'll rewrite this in a less trollish fashion at home. Quote
D3ads Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Reminds me of 'Reign Of Fire'... Quote
Psy Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 It sounds like a horrible game. Who thought it was clever to have the lock-on system controlled by the AI? Quote

Not a 9/10 title, but 7s and 8s are also good I’ll certainly buy Heavenly Sword, but I think it’s more to do with justifying my PS3 than anything else. I personally dislike the newer approaches to combat systems that not only allow, but encourage, you mashing the joy pad like a ham-fisted oaf to launch tens of different combinations that all do exactly the same thing. Same for Heavenly Sword, Blue Dragon and Folklore. Is someone going to make a next-gen game that's actually fun? Blue Dragon is great. But it doesn't surprise me the American reviews it gets are bad. Your post reads as if JRPG’s were some cult genre. JRPGS are a separate genre, have been around since the NES, and America gets more of them than Europe. The 360 doing badly in Japan is the reason Blue Dragon was made, so it’s unsurprising it’s doing well there. They brought together three massive JRPG names to create Blue Dragon to try and woo them over. Unfortunately it’s FFV’s class system through a series of clichés with annoying characters. It should have been something spectacular. Edit: I've just thought, basically my problem on both is they're too casual and for people who don't revel in these things. So I'll just shut up and wait for Disgaea 3. Quote
Lee3dee Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 (opinion based on playing a friends copy) graphically it looks gorgeous, its really incredible to see the detail in HD. The controls take a little while to get used to, its a shame that you aren't given any options to use the analog sticks. Trusting your hands left and right to steer the dragon is very unique at first, but it gets somewhat frustrating during the battle sequences. The games production values are almost the same as God of War, the art is stunning, the behind the scenes are interesting and the music is awesome. Its a shame that the sixaxis controls hurt the games playability. I'm interested to play warhawk and see how they handled the similar controls. Quote
ginsengavenger Posted September 9, 2007 Report Posted September 9, 2007 Well, it's a hard one to say... The motion control is the most controversial issue. I'm sure the game would have done better in reviews, maybe by 10%, if there were just the option for stick control. Given the option though, I don't think many people would opt for motion control since it does take some time to learn - and it's difficult to learn new things in stressful situations. That said, once I got into it I honestly do prefer the motion control for flight. I heard something about older PS3 firmware not supporting the motion sensitivity as well as the latest version, but I can't speak to that since we're all updated. Can't say I'm happy with the reviews but really, nothing they are saying comes as a surprise. I was responsible for three of the levels and I'm proud of my work. Quote
