You really could do with higher resolutions for your images that's for sure. They're tiny. But if you intend to increase the scale when you add new shots, then I have no moans.

The huge ream of text really does break up the page too much. You've got loads of text there that is mostly redundant. Personally, I'd put your current career goal at the top followed by a summary of your key skills similar to the bullet point list you've got. Don't include your favourite book and interests there, either -- you can briefly include that sort of stuff in a more expansive resume/CV under interests.

Anyway, hit them with the skills then get straight down to displaying examples of your work. The mistake most people make (myself included) is to waffle too much about what they do. From what I've been told, you want to keep a portfolio / CV as skills based as possible. Telling a big story about the chronological order of your development / modding experiences isn't a good idea because recruiters don't really care. Listing your dev & mod work (number of years, maps contributed, responsibilities) in a concise fashion is a much better idea than an expansive story about how you joined a mod and made a map in March 2006 and that it was your third map and that you were kinda happy with it. :)

I.e. compact everything you've got and prioritise the information. If a sentence or paragraph doesn't actually tell them anything useful, get rid of it.

You might also want to think about reformatting your page. Maybe have a compacted style of resume & the art directly in their face, then include a link or a separate area that contains the (full) resume.

Look at ReNo's portfolio site to see what I mean:

http://www.reno-vation.net/

In addition to what I suggest, there's a great site that's been posted multiple times before: http://www.thejonjones.com/2005/10/07/y ... pels-jobs/

The main things I'd take from that site (in addition to what I've said)

  1. [*:haxrq65b]Contact information! Where is your contact info? I can't see it. Put it at the top of the page. Make it more prominent than the rest of the information.
[*:haxrq65b]Image sizes (already covered). I personally really hate small screenshots (< 800x600) because it's almost as if the person is hiding something. You might notice that even shitty stuff looks cool if you shrink it enough, but it dies on its arse if you see it at 1600x1200. Higher res = better. I'd personally go for ~1024x768 as that's a fairly good baseline of screen resolution these days. If I see small screenshots I automatically think the person is hiding something (usually a lack of craft / detail in an environment). I'm a cynical bastard, and I can guarantee that a lot of recruiters that deal with this stuff on a day to day basis are significantly more cynical than I am!
[*:haxrq65b]Image branding. This is a lot easier to do in a tasteful fashion if your images are fairly large. Just put your name & web/email address on 'em as unobtrusively as possible.

I'm by no means an expert on this stuff, but I have had my portfolio & CV shredded lately by someone who has dealt with recruitment, so I figured I'd pass on some of the stuff I had said about mine :).

What he said.

Also, Quake 1 maps? You might have nostalgic relationship to these, but its time to cut em loose :). I cant see any of the HL2 or Q3 maps, but I'm gonna bet that you'll be better of by cutting Q1 maps and only showing half the stuff.

Also, too much brown right now for my likings. Brown site, brown maps, brown'ish models, brown photos. Donno, just doesn't seem very appealing from looking at the site IMO

A joyous happy sunflower map could go a long way here ;)

Thanks for feedback, specially Defrag :) Tomorow I'll try to find time to connect it with wordpress and change layout colors a bit :> I won't delete Q1 levels. Thisi s a part of the history and deleting this can also mean that I'm ashamed of this. No, I'm not - it's old but someone still is interesting of it (maaany Q1 fans ;))

What I think Mazy here means is that you should remove it from your portfolio part of your site. It really shouldn't be the first thing a potential employer looks at. Put it in a "old work" page or something.

Cant see how you could take any other way, yeah. What? You thought I meant deleting the maps permanently? Hell no! You gotta keep that stuff for as long as you possibly can. I'd still pay a fortune to get my very first stuff back again that I lost in a format, but now its too late and its gone forever. Just don't show it in your portfolio, it detracts instead of adding.

Your portfolio has potential to improve an a lot if you listen the advices given so far in this thread. Replace all the redundant text with thumbnails linking to high res images.
