Halo was pretty good before I played Half-Life 2. Now, I cannot bare to play Halo 1/2. They're so generic and boring and really lack anything that stands out against pretty much every PC FPS ever.

At least it got casual gamers into FPS. I guess.

i never understood the deal with halo it is/was always a below average looking/playing first person shooter the only original thing about it is the actual ring shape of the planet ... which is barely the focus of attention since halo 2

Sorry but as a lifelong Sci-Fi fan I gotta point out that the ringworld was blatantly nicked from Larry Niven's awesome 1970 novel.

If you've not read it and like sci-fi you're seriously missing out.

QFT. Still, it's fun if you're playing with friends in the same room. I certainly couldn't care less about Halo 3 anyway.

I think Halo was a hit only because Console guys had never played any Quake type game before it. PC guys look at it and see a game they played five years ago but to Console players it was a whole new world. What FPS on a console was any good before Halo? I would say the best was Goldeneye. The first Turok was descent. Pretty slim pickings after that. They just came out at the right time.

They also worked very hard to make the controls not only feel good but let you hit a target (which was pretty damn hard on other games before it).

I was a fan of the first one. I would play CS at work until 10pm, then stumble home and find my roomy had 14+ dudes in the living room having a LAN Halo fest. After a while I started playing and ended up having a great time. I think this was more because of the atmosphere then the game. It was great talking shit to the other team and getting all exited with your team when you won.

When Halo2 came out and it went online, the atmosphere was gone and I noticed I didn’t have fun playing anymore. The gameplay was just kind of boring to me.

yeah tbh i was a halo 1 fan. The reason was, i could invite some friends over and get drunk and play some competitive fps without worrying if my friends had their own pc's and etc. It reminded me of the goldeneye day's where you would be constantly blaming your demise on the other players "screen peaking" :P

halo one also had arcade elements that i enjoyed such as non destructible warthogs and a simple array of weapons. When halo 2 came around i didnt like it but thats because halflife2 etc had me in full reigns. but the reason why halo 2 was a success was the fact that people without pc's could play online against eachother in a fps. So essentially i consider halo the counterstrike of console gaming, its not a overly complicated idea its just easy for the masses.

yeah thats why the multiplayer of halo1 is still fun as hell when you play it with some friends. It feels like a sandbox game where your just fucking around often. I didnt like the competitive feel of halo2 multiplayer at all.
