Got a pair at work (Since thats where I use em the most). Kinda pricey, but the best I've tried.

Oh and fuck the mic :)

I too got those at work. Awesome still.

Got the 990 at home and they are just as good but I like to be sound isolated at work :)

I always make the wire snap, rip or so. So I don't get too expensive ones.

Cause after a few weeks, only 1 of the 2 is working, if it's working at all.

But with that said, I'm really good at getting myself tangeled into the cord.

You nutter.

Sennheiser headphones definitely sit in the top bracket of quality, but another thing they're excellent for is how user-fixable they are. The entire thing can basically be taken apart by hand with most models, meaning you can buy and install a replacement for essentially any part.

The most useful in my opinion is the removable cord, which simply pops out of the headphone if pulled and is like a tiny normal audio cable (ie: the ones you put into your sound card). I often yank them by accident and this saves otherwise guaranteed damage, and after two years one side died and I was able to just get a new cord for like £10 and perfectly restore them.

I need to pick up a new set of headphones myself actually - about time I invested in some good ones. My existing, not-too-hot pair get left in my office, but I'm about to move into a flat with some mates and I don't think my 5.1 system will be appreciated by them or the neighbours!

I can sympathise with stolve's problem of breaking/worn cables, but for me that only happens on earphones I use on the go with my mp3 player. Those are something I'd love to spend money on to get a good set of, but if they're only gonna last me 6 months I don't really wanna splash out too much.

They were a little expensive when I bought them, but its the far best piece of headphones I have had to date. St0lves problem is non-existent with these phones because the cord is unplug gable at the headset end also. The Sound is beyond anything I have heard and they have held true for 3 years now. (Actually I think I bought them summer 2004 and they are still in tip top shape. They came in a really super box which I've also kept all these years (I seldom keep these things). When lacking proper speakers for the PC I'm working on I can just boost up the sound and they can play as loud as very small speakers so people can hear. And they don't get ruined from it.

My last two speakers were the cheap but really great sounding KOSS UR-40 and UR-20. If you are just after a pair of great cheap headsets (that also muffles exterior noises, great at lan parties), then I suggest some of the newer KOSS headphones...

I got a pair of Sennheiser HD 201 at work and the sound is really fantastic. They don't look superexpensive though and I don't think they are either, so if you want great sound for a fair price, then I think they are an obvious choice.

If you want a nice cheap pair for gaming with good quality for the money and a nice mic, I'd recommend the Sennheiser PC150s (or similar). Should be able to find them for £35-45 these days. For that kind of dosh, you won't do much better.

The Sennheiser HD 650 is pretty happening it appears.. the thing with the higher end headphones is you really need a pre-amp to get the best ouf of the headphones and thats another 100$ or so? I'd quite like the Audio Technica ATH-A900 ~170$ I think :banjo: These aren't meant for gaming :P

I think the HD 650 is probably beyond the scope of the author as they are pretty much the most expensive headphones Sennheiser do. Pretty much any pair in the Sennheiser HD line is going to be excellent though, and even the HD 212 pair I had a few years ago absolutely pissed all over any in the same price range.

Although there is a pattern emerging in this thread with the recommendation of Sennheiser (HD) headphones, I think it's probably worth reiterating: they are very good headphones! And since they have a huge range of price levels that all deliver increasingly good quality, starting low will still provide excellent sound.

The Sennheiser brand itself is very well respected, and considered one of the main audiophile brands. As I said above, the higher up the HD range you go, the more incredible detail you can hear (the breath between singers' lyrics example is not an exaggeration).
