JohnC Posted August 22, 2007 Author Report Posted August 22, 2007 Whoa. On the back of the bus in that shot, it says "Empire City." I just noticed that. The next city for the game, maybe? Quote
Thrik Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 I meant the big shaded area on the left side of the street. The lighting in it seems really bland and flat. I have to say the screenshot doesn't overwhelm me that much, though. Like the original Mafia it looks competent for sure, but 'beautiful' really isn't a word I'd use to describe it. It's just a decent interpretation of an old-style city -- not much style or imagination there. Quote
-HP- Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Well, it does for sure successfully recreates the 50's mood. I wonder if they'r using an improved version of the same engine as Mafia 1. Quote
JohnC Posted August 22, 2007 Author Report Posted August 22, 2007 I meant the big shaded area on the left side of the street. The lighting in it seems really bland and flat. Er, it's the shadow of a building. The real thing is pretty bland and flat too. Quote
Thrik Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Oh, of course. You're right. I totally forgot what a shadowed building looks like; I guess I must be wrong, and am in no position to criticise. It's more the way the shadow affects the objects/people/etc inside it that looks off to me. Look at the car and the man. Look at the lack of shadowing beneath them that they should be casting. It's just a bit iffy. Quote
Rick_D Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 goes to show it's hard to make 'clean' look 'real' ;D Quote
Sa74n Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Looks like 2K games got the next hit after Bioshock already lined up. yeah 2k games sure has some awesome games in their portfolio. the darkness and bioshock are definitely on my must-play list. now i just need to buy a 360 Quote
D3ads Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Oh my God that looks amazing, I only played Mafia a few months ago and it's definately one of my favourite games now, this can't fail to be good... ...please don't suck Quote
JohnC Posted August 23, 2007 Author Report Posted August 23, 2007 Trailer at youtube: Can't understand any of it, but the visuals are impressive. Quote
Vinny Testaverde Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 graphics look too good to be true. but if they are i hope they didn't sacrifice the size of the environments for it. thats what was so great about the first one, the maps were just endless and you were always exploring new parts... Rick_D Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 but none of that actually looks ingame - unless they have some kind of dynamic camera <_ Quote
Bic-B@ll Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 well the original mafia had ingame cutscenes so you never know. Quote
-HP- Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 Mmm, yeah, that looks pre-rendered. PS. I felt like posting this: http://stage6.divx.com/My-PC-Games-Worl ... afia-intro Enjoy a moment of nostalgy! Quote

It's just a bit iffy. thats the problem with dynamic lighting, you can only cast simple shadows and not make the light bounce off and scatter like it would in real life. Shadow areas always have thesame ambient color because of that, which looks very flat Quote
