I just played the demo too and I think the reason all the cars drive like that is because they're supposed to be faithful to the huge hulking all metal cars of 1930-1950. Unfortunately this historical accuracy doesn't really translate to good driving in a video game.

Just tried the demo and some of it was good and some of it was bad. Only visual setting that made any noticeable difference was turning on Physx, which made some bits of debris hit the floor and stop instead of falling right through it, and it dropped the fps by almost 30 average in the benchmark. In general the textures looked kinda bad. Flat, kinda washed out. Biggest issue though was the driving. Maybe I just picked the wrong car in the magic garage but the Thunderbolt handled like a car in GTA that's had its tires popped, especially while going slow- it weirdly gained more control the faster I drove. Not a mechanic I can say I've ever seen before in a game.

Shootout in the distillery was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Cutscene was funny though.

 Playboy centerfold collectables.

Was it like driving a car without power steering? Sounds like how rack & pinion steering works in the real world.

Just played the 360 demo. At first I figured I'd cruise a bit around, check things out, but since there was a time limit on a headed straight for the objective.

The firefights in the distillery should be pretty good in theory, lots of destructible items and such, but the feel of the shooting and moving the character around just felt really sluggish that it took me totally out of the experience. Even though they have all the standard aim assists on then it always felt really awkward when I had to aim on enemies. Also I think I heard the same line from your gang buddies about 20 times in a period of 1 minute during the escort outta the distillery, he kinda broke down at the elevators, maybe because I thought I had to get it working to have him go down :G.

So after I finished I restarted it to check out the city, and not too long in I figured out it has the same issue that bugs me about a lot of free-roaming city games after playing GTA IV; Everything feels very confined and horizontal. You might have a somewhat large area to run and drive around in, but the fact that you can't climb objects of any kind is just such a massive limitation to the world after playing stuff like GTA IV and the AC games. I don't know if I'm just being super picky, but the entire mechanic of being able climb objects in GTA IV was a leap in the way you traverse the environment in the same league as being able to swim in San Andreas. But I guess they might be going for more of a hub world feel in Mafia II for between missions, rather than a large city where you feel encouraged to explore it.

It does look and sound quite good though, I quite like the entire 50's vibe, plus I actually like the way the vehicles handle. Might be because it's set to normal by default on 360.

Anyway, I'm not being hard on this one just because it's in the same launch window as KL2. I've already pre-ordered Mafia II and I'm definitely still gonna play it, it just doesn't feel quite as exciting as I had anticipated.

I liked the demo, was really short but I liked it. Love the art direction of the game, very clean and a nice change from the usual. One thing that bugged me visually was the foliage, it's kind of... "fuzzy" for some reason, looks strange. Once I got used to the shooting mechanics, which reminded me of Brothers In Arms a little, I found that the game is pretty fun. Especially with a shotgun.

Starting fights with random dudes is always funny as well, too bad you only get the 12 minutes to be outside in the demo. All in all, I think it's going to be an awesome game.

it didnt run very well on my pc which is kind of disappointing, i definitely felt like the gameplay was kind of sluggish, i hate the lack of crouch. i felt like the firefights were just to drop behind cover and wait for the enemy to pop out from his cover (always in the exact same spot) and shoot him. in the second playthrough i realized that if you walk slow you can see the guys before they react to you and just take your time and shoot them each in the face.

i liked in the first mafia how the exterior and interiors were seamless, i didnt like how they felt so disconnected here. i had the graphics on low and it was still slow but the city didnt seem to exciting, driving was hard, and there wasnt much going on. that and it was dark as fuck; felt like doom 3 in that warehouse.

You can crouch, it's not an extremely low crouch but it's in there. I actually didn't mind the driving too much, there's definitely room for improvement though. I only tried the simulation setting, will see how it is on normal next time I play.

I wasn't planning on pre-ordering it but seeing how most of you liked the first one, I think I might go ahead and buy it from steam now.
