hessi Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 man i am so lucky, i can't tell you. like 2 weeks ago i ordered a 500GB external HDD with firewire etc. as it arrived i first thought: good time to backup your photos, so a HDD crash wont take away your hard work. and today: BAAAAM. HDD crashed! when i browse my photo library i cant enter several folders because the partition table seems to be messed up. somehow the folders lost their directory bit (god praise linux where you can fix that with one little program). so i hope that all my data of my current map project is not fucked up or i will kill my self! working on it for like 14 months and damn close to a release! i hate windows! it's a homo's devil system using NTFS. MrBaracuda Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 What an intriguing story. Good thing that you told us ASAP, what would we have done without this piece ot notable information! Oh and don't waste your breath on what the program's called or anything to make this thread even more awesome! Quote
hessi Posted May 23, 2007 Author Report Posted May 23, 2007 i felt like i had to tell. if you dont care: delete this thread. "delete c:\hessi" or "rm /Users/hessi" Quote
e-freak Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 so... howmuch of it is fucked and is there no chance that those projects might be given to other people (no idea but you may have given some maps to warby or something like this?) Quote
Quakis Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 Wait, you made some backups before or after installing the HDD? I've had enough of HDD crashes I make backups too often because I just lose far too much stuff. If you tried making some backups before installing it then that is a load of suck, I'd probably smash the monitor up even though it should be the actual system's fault... Quote
hessi Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 the hdd that crashed wasnt the external hdd. the crashing hdd was a 300GB internal drive with all my "custom" files. so it wrecked some photo directories. as lucky as i am, i did a backup as my external 500GB arrived so i did not loose everything, bu tholy cow. that one was close! e-freak Posted May 24, 2007 Report Posted May 24, 2007 So... i am scared... What does that 500 GB External cost? Quote
hessi Posted May 24, 2007 Author Report Posted May 24, 2007 i got firewire 800 on my mac so i paid like 180 Euro (~220$). cheap usb HDDs cost less. maybe 130-150 Euro. but as i can tell you: usb2.0 is fucking shit. though it specifies 480Mbit/s it IS slower than firewire400 (400Mbit/s) and takes more CPU power while copying files! i got a "mybook pro 500GB". there is a 1TB version avaible which you can run as RAID-Level 5. Ginger Lord Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 Ordered a 250Gb MyBook Essential the otherday off ebuyer.com, with Google Checkout it was £45 delivered I think the 500Gb version was £89. Quote
Sindwiller Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 (god praise linux where you can fix that with one little program) Really bad to hear hessi. Lost any stuff? :/ Quote

BTW, some time ago I bought second seagate 7200.10 320gb especially for my final projects and textures/references also to prevent crash Quote
