Zeta Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 twice the size as last time, custom content Quote
Sentura Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 More "custom" content to be used (i.e. supplied by contest starter and can be used at will by the mappers). We've seen some vert maps here, to fully use the space of 1024^3... How about 2048*2048*1024? (same height, more horizontal) singleplayer maps would be cool as well. it's been a while since i've seen any mods or anything for hl/hl2sp, so i'd like that. Quote
insta Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 If we did a singleplayer contest (and I'm talking small scale, keep that in mind!) we'd get _alot_ of attention/interest from these here internets, since everybody craves more SP for HL2. Even if only 3-4 maps were actually completed and submitted it would be a success. Quote

Evert Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 We could easily have the same as we had on the 1024 contest, but larger. Like 'make a singleplayer level 2048x2048 units', that will force people from not doing the typical corridor running action, but more focus on ONE situation. More like a little gameplay element that could be like "oh this is the time I'm introduced to this type of level miniboss thingy". Like, "Hold the barricades, omfgbbq the fuckers are breaking through, kill them, omfg gunship ahead go collect that rpg they're keeping in their safe and destroy it!!!" Like 5-10 minutes gameplay that takes place on one location, to see who can make the most out of it. Edit - custom content should really be up to the person making it, but most time should prolly be spent on the actual layout and scripting to make it hella phunnn. Quote

I was thinking "boss fight", or atleast one enviroment which is used to have a great battle. An example would be fighting a strider in a somewhat open courtyard, fighting waves of Combine in a multi-floor enviroment, fighting one of those large Ant Lion thingies etc. I also think we should impose a size limit, and possibly only use stock content except for possibly additional content provided by the contest itself so that people don't get too carried away and fail to produce anything at all. Remember we had to delay the 1024 contest like 3 times, and that was somewhat "simple". Quote
mabufo Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 I guess I could manage the single player arena type thing, of course, with contests like these - I'm quite terrible at actually thinking up a map to make (IE: what I'm I'm going to map). For me, that's 75% of the trouble. Quote
Psyshokiller Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 I like Evert's Idea of having a short singleplayer experience with a gameplay of 15 or 30 minutes. Also we shoudln't focus on a single limitation like map size. My thoughts for a contest: - create a map with about 15 minutes of exciting gameplay - no map size limitation - the goal is to create a different gameplay experience which is short and intense - no custom content I think it's important not to allow custom content, since people will tend to start too ambitious projects then, which leads to fail the deadline. Even though, the deadline should prevent people from doing that. All in all it will be about to create something along the lines of Lost Coast. Quote
twiz Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 How about using no content at all? Or no textures at least. Just have geometry of flat solid colors. Thats forces you to think about lighting, brushwork, architecture, the actual space etc, also gameplay and layout. could yield interesting results. Most modern architecture today uses little texture in their materials. examples: http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/blogon/upload/2006/06/zaha2.jpg http://www.guggenheim.org/hadid/images/highlights3.jpg It will stretch the imagination more and you probably get the most original source engine maps. just a thought... I really like this idea. Just a texturepack with a bunch of different colored textures, maybe throw a sandstone filter over it and a normal map to give the lighting more life. I imagine things like what Peris did in the HL1dm contest, although his were just screenshots: Quote
Minos Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 A contest with limited materials would be nice, just like the 52hr contests. We have lots of artists here, I'm pretty sure we can make a nice texture pack. Quote
Rick_D Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 How about using no content at all? That made me chuckle EH I like the idea of an SP contest but if it's going to be judged solely on the screen shots then what's the point? Not trying to be a dickhead or anything but what stops someone making a shitty gameplay experience but a few nice looking screenshots of the shitty gameplay in action and winning because of the poor voting system? I mean if that's the case I'm in ;D Quote

Not too many people enjoy HL2DM, and actually playing and evaluating maps would be far too much effort. Quote
Bic-B@ll Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 as i find dm about the furthest thing from entertaining i would absolutely love to see a competition with tfc as the game, i might consider whipping something up (and never finishing it) Quote
KoKo5oVaR Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Evert idea sounds pretty interesting to me, if you are doing that, i'm in Quote
zeon Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 maybe a chain contest. first a texture contest, then a modeling contest, and finaly a single player hl2 map contest. with the content from the two others contest, and hl2 content. but maybe make it 3*2048*2048*2048. so you have 3 levels for the single player level. maybe even have a theme, so the maps can be merged together?. and then make a boss contest as the final.
