The toughest game levels/missions

I'm playing through Mafia at the moment, a title about 1930's American gangsters that despite it's age still stands the test of time and manages to beat the shit out of many modern games imho.

Anyway, one of the missions involves your character racing and it is so damn hard because you have to go past 5 laps and come first place. I literally spent an hour trying to do it before finally giving up and looking for some walkthroughs/cheats on the web. Funny thing is, upon returning to the mission ready to give up and cheat I decided to try it one last time and I won! The handling on the cars is terrible, unless you slow down on the corners you are dogmeat and if you manage to hit sand or grass your car spins and it's extremely hard to get back into the race again.

I think this is definately one of the hardest missions I've ever had to get through and it is notoriously known to Mafia players to be the mission where everyone gives up and stops playing. Stupid thing is, with the patch you can set the difficulty to easy and the cars always crash so you have plenty of time to get into the lead

Another one that springs to mind is one of the last missions on GTA3, you have to drive an armoured truck from one island to another with a full wanted level, also there's another one where you must race from Staunton to Shoreside Vale Airport to collect some packages being dropped by a plane at a certain time and by collecting them you get a full wanted level again.. that pissed me off so much.

System Shock 2's 'Body Of The Many' also induced massive headaches several times.

I found a lot of the GTA missions, especially in the first set of 3D GTA's since the missions, very frustrating.

Timers running out, planes that just cant be controlled easily, my team mate shooting my other team mate thus ending the damn mission and so on.

I basically hate anything that has a timer and stresses me out, likewise in Sonic on the DS, the water level. You can only stay under water for X seconds so you need to run through vast underwater areas at top speed if you want to make it, if you happen to hit some moving pillar or an enemy on your way to the other side you can start over again. Damn frustrating since you cant always help it that you hit something, especially since the game moves quite fast.

company of heroes was pretty tough even on easiest mode. but then again im not really an rts player.

i definitely agree on that mafia racing mission being nasty. i actually downloaded a safegame to skip it.

call of cthulhu hat some difficult areas as well but not to the point where you start to get pissed off :-D

If anyone remembers Ridge Racer Revolution on PS1 (the second of the RR games), you needed to beat a black car, then once you beat that black car, you could play with it and beat a white car to finish the game.

The only way to beat those cars was not only to do the perfect race, but also block them behind you as you saw them in the rear view mirror. That was tough alright

i beat the mafia race on like third try or something didn't seam like a big problem to me but i got warned beforehand by about 10 people that that mission IS ZE SCHEISSE difficulty wise so i was so scared that it acutely seamed easy compared to what did hear about it.

hardest mission ever: the kratos vs kratos clones fight in god of war in god mode is like unbeatable ...

castlevania symphony of the night: that huge end boss with the rod that fills the entire screen with lightnings ... absolutely unbeatable even if you play it with an emulators ( frame by frame saving) you need to use that mega rare armor that turns lighting damage into health or your screwed.

final fantasy 7: beating the black chocobo rider in the race ... i heard you cant even beat him with a golden chocobo because he always has +10% of your speed

God Hand, just in general, is bloody tough. Currently at a point where you fight 3 bosses in a row that has me pretty much stumped - I can deal with the first 2, but to do so I end up using all my specials (you need to collect items to use your most powerful moves) and most of my health. The final of the 3 is also the toughest it would seem. Finding the will to put it in the PS2 again is a real struggle at this point!

Another game I can't bring myself to play again is Lost Planet. There were a few tricky sections through the game (playing on hard mode) as collecting enough thermal energy to survive some encounters was a real trial. Most of the time I ended up letting my mechs be destroyed at tactical moments so I could nab the energy they leave behind. That said though, its the end boss that has me scratching my head. I'm sure there is some approach I haven't tried - I might end up on GameFAQs for that one.

There's some cheat you can do with holding the shoulder buttons or something that recharges your stamina slowly - it's the only way I managed to beat him. Think its 10% extra of your stamina that he has, rather than speed, by the way. I had a maxed out stamina stat (999 I think?) after having bred several generations of golden chocobo, but he even manages to push his beyond 1000. Can't remember if you even get anything much for beating him to be honest.

any game that doesn't have quicksave/load screws me up :P

I remember pretty much all of the syphon filter 1 and 2 missions being damn tough - the final boss in number 2 was tough as fuck, but not as hard as the cathedral mission, that had me turning off my ps1 quite a few times.

The most recent game that almost made me break the controller was Burnout Revenge on the 360. Some of the time trials in the end that game were just inhuman, requiring you to do everything perfect, especially the ones where you had a F1 racer D:. I was swearing and throwing things around constantly every time a time trial went on :)

Oh and yeah Furyo, those races were just nuts, and I remember the reward being rather anti climatic (Yay now I have a car that'll beat everything....hmmm)

the mafia race is pretty hard. but once you know the car, you can do it in 2 or so tries. but a mission later on a dock was so damn annoying... couldnt figure out what to do.. :)
