Steppenwolf Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/ I watched this interesting soviet russian movie from 1979 today. There are definately similaritys. The zone in the movie is caused by a meteor or ufo. There is a stalker who guides a professor and a writer into the zone. Their target is to reach a room deep inside the zone where their biggest wish comes true. In the movie the zone is a beautiful but very weird place. There is lots of nature but the stalker cant stop to warn the others about the dangers. To find what could be described as anomalies in their way they throw metal nuts on a bandage. Opposite to the game there is as good as no action in the movie. Its a slow paced, surrealistic "art" movie with lots of philosophical discussions between the characters. For its age the sound design and soundtrack is awesome. Definately worth watching but dont expect hollywood movie. Its more like going in a real theatre watching some avant garde piece. even the yellow sky is in the movie Quote
Section_Ei8ht Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 If you liked the movie, you should read Roadside Picnic, the book the movie was loosely based on. Quote
Dodger Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 The game is based on the real chernobyl accident and both the movie at the same time. I read it in Pcgamer. Quote

Thrik Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Hey now, Nexus might actually have a point there for once. I didn't realise it was based on that movie, which isn't set in Chernobyl and was made before the Chernobyl incident even occurred (1986). Unless PC Gamer was talking about some other movie and not the one called "Stalker". Quote
Sindwiller Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Probably, the devs just took the title and the style of the movie and placed it into the future after the Chernobyl accident. So, obviously inspiration from both real and non-real sources. Quote
ShaDoW Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 I took a look at an old "teaser" from the film, like the game the movie feels very atmospheric, the scenery seem well done. But most of the teaser was the three men riding a small cart on a railway, just filming their heads looking around for 5 minutes. Not the kind of movie most of us are used to these days, but its an old movie and I'm quite anxious to check it out. Quote

Pretty much captures the atmosphere and style of the whole movie. Listen to the music. Its fucking awesome for a movie from 1979! Quote
