Buddy Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Montella, 2002 version didn't had this kind of dynamic lights which could use D3 light maps (there was no D3 at the time either), but anyways, those lights are used in the Final game, ie. the flashlight is from D3. They've stolen it, there is no excuse for them. Another 1post GSC defender btw.
JamesL Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Even if that is the case, its a momumental failure on the part of the of developer to leave said content in the release version of the game. It also shows how dangerous it can be to use other's assets if you're not going to be meticulous about their removal post-alpha. It would be interesting to strip the D3 assets out of the game, then play it through and see if there were any missing textures/materials noticible anywhere.

Zihaben Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Nothing new to any post-soviet developer. But what are you expecting from Ukraine developers with salary $200 per month? They are hiring boys rght form the school bench. They uses pirated 3d max, Windows , Photoshop and Lightwave. On the Frogwares Ukraine, we has huge case with CD's full of warez. For hiring somebody like Kenneth Scott for texturing, their managers should sell their livers

Rick_D Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Then they must not use stolen assets. Inspiration is great, I often look at how other people do things, then incorporate that into my way of doing things, but I don't just _take_ their hard work. Heavy deadlines and pressure from the publisher must have been difficult to deal with but then they must just put in some overtime, or outsource some art from freelance people. Also, to comment on the "if they just left it in but didn't use it ingame there's not a problem" issue: wrong, people paid for the game and GSC shipped and profited from that content no matter which way you look at it. Stealing someone's work is the lowest of the low, it's tenfold worse when you make money from it. From what I have read of all post-soviet enterprises, bending the law is common-place and there are no repercussions, more often than not you are respected for it. This, however, is out of order in a massive way. As much as I love the game, I fully hope that id and Valve deal with this theft and set an example to any other developers that think 'taking some dough froma big baker' is perfectly acceptable. It's not.

I don't understand what you are saying? They would only lose money if they were caught and could be prosecuted. By not buy a license they are saving thousands of dollars.
FrieChamp Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 I don't think they wanted to do any harm or were aware of the consequences that could result from using placeholder material "borrowed" from other games. If you are too casual about it, stuff like this gets into a build, maybe slightly modified later on, possibly by somebody else who doesn't even know that it is placeholder and where it comes from, the files are forgotten, the game ships, somebody with a sharp eye finds it and you get fubar like this.

That's what I figured. People seem to jump to the conclusion that this was some big scheme pulled off by GSC to finish their game faster. It just seems a little odd, considering the amount of work that was put into STALKER itself, that they would just have to resort to using a few simple images from other games. Not that they shouldn't be held accountable and sort the issue out with the offended developers, but I think this ends up falling on the accidental side of things.
st0lve Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Id\Valve should feel honoured that GSC used their content in a masterpiece.
Lost_Point Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 As i just posted in a doom3 related forum. I browsed the stalker .db" files with this new extract tool which is around. I saw that they are using doom3 lightimages. for the people which own both games can compare the "lights" folders. I'm wondering if the russian guys got the permission for using them. As a hobbyist i think its not that fair. If i'm using textures from another game without having the big money in mind i will get mails from a lawer or someting like that. even if i only want to do a cool level. here are two comparsion shots: stalker light-folder: http://home.arcor.de/fieslings-place/st ... tdiebe.jpg doom3 light-folder: http://home.arcor.de/fieslings-place/st ... lights.jpg As i just posted in CIA official forum... I browsed the quake I .pak files with winrar. I saw that they are using texture of shotgun from Chasm: The Rift for the people which own pale of brains can found it easily! I'm wondering if the canadian guys got the permission for using them. As a therapist, i think its not that fair. If i'm using textures from another game without having the big money in mind i will get flash-mobers from a ru-net or someting like that. even if i only want to do a cool level. Dodger Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Yeh right! Don't worry about people stealing your content. If your content are good, you'll have to ram it down people's throats. Stealing works, if all you care about is money. Wasn't this thread also created on 1 april?
Sindwiller Posted April 8, 2007 Report Posted April 8, 2007 Idiots probably overran Mapcore  (no, not you michi.be)
