Rick_D Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 I have tried a few things I saw recommended by 'professionals' but nothing worked. This is annoying because I cannot finish my scene without it - 24 materials is bullshit and it just replaces the originals if I try anything. I have already existing materials and if I try the Bitmap -> 'none selected' (or w/e it is) I don't actually see that option. Please, help me with your wisdom while I frantically google search. Quote
teeluu Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 I really don't know shit about max, but ain't there some submaterial thingie? Or then just use the slots available, you can create several materials with just one slot, you can pick the material from the object to the wanted slot (if i remember right). You can't have more slots afaik. Quote
Hourences Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Youre looking for the term "Multi/Sub-Object" so google that. Basically in the mat editor, select one of the 24 things, and at the top right of its properties area you see Standard. Its a button and its below the button that toggles the material on or off in the viewport (the blue checker cube). Click it, and select Multi Sub. The rest should be self explaining. Warby Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 you can only have 24 materials in max out of the box ????? that is .... absolutely ... fucking ... "anti design" Quote
Pericolos0 Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 you can only have 24 materials in max out of the box ????? that is .... absolutely ... fucking ... "anti design" Well if you use sub object you have pretty much an unlimited ammount. But still... 3dsmax really has the most ancient material editor imagineable . Quote
Rick_D Posted March 30, 2007 Author Report Posted March 30, 2007 thanks all, cascade gave me some great tips on IRC. Quote
Zacker Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 The idea of a fixed amount of materials is ancient indeed. Quote
Vinny Testaverde Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 No. you can have unlimited materials in 3dsmax, you can only have 24 displayed at any given time in the material editor. Load up the map material browser (under Render menu) and from there you can swamp materials from the editor with the ones present in your scene. If you have a lot of materials you can save them in a library. there are also plenty of other useful features when using this Quote
Rick_D Posted March 31, 2007 Author Report Posted March 31, 2007 Yeah - basically I am just removing materials once I am done with them and using the eyedropper tool to bring them back if I need to, however I have saved my texs in a library so if I need to get my first lot back I can do so. Problem is I have no idea how to load a library lol, any tips, Jon? Quote
Vinny Testaverde Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 There are options on the left side that are for browse from different places, click on MTL library and you load up a .mat from there, or merge them together, or get all the materials from one scene. Quote
