The_Blond_night Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 This is a small, battle-torn town. The allies have attempted to take it once already, to be pushed back. But, now with a thick heavy fog the time to strike has come. Can the axis hold them back? **UPDATES** This is the newest and final version of Abancourt. After listening to the players, I have heavily optimized this version, doubling the FPS to better then the standard maps (dod_flash, dod_colmar ,etc.). I have removed the broken building on the waterfront and added a fortified emplacement to aid the allies in holding back the axis, balancing gameplay. Stretegically improved the placement of props or brushes, also fixed any obvious flaws brought to my attention. Dodger Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 awsome.. the fog adds heavy atmosphere to the map. but, I don't have DOD. Quote
Minos Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 I don't like it to be honest. Here are a few points: * The map does not look like 1945 at all. Those buildings in the first screenshot don't even look believable. Get rid of the modern glass windows and of the grass on the stone floor. * I can notice an horrendous clash of styles all over the map. For example, in the second shot you can see a wooden framed bulding on top of a stone wall and a cheap/modern building next to it. * Research WW2-period architecture. You can find countless resources on the web. * That huge brick building looks horrible. It's flat, boring and simply too huge to look believable. It makes no sense at all. * I can spot bad aligned textures in LOTS of places, pay attention to this next time. * The sidewalks look really flat * You said it's a battle-torn town. Where's the fire ? Where's the destruction ? Where's the gore ? Where's the debris ? * That building with a hole in the middle is my favourite to be honest (SARCASM). I mean, it just makes no sence. Was the hole sliced off by an alien weapon or something like that ? ** USE DECALS** * As for the lighting it's also very bad imo. The thick fog was either a desperate attempt to hide the map's flaw or a desperate attempt to make the FPS better. It just makes the map even flatter. The lighting color/shadow intensity also needs some work. We have seem that kind of lighting in like 231031 maps. Sorry to sound harsh but truth needs to be said. I can spot some potential in you. Just plan out your map better next time and do LOTS of research before getting to actual work. Quote
JamesL Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Minos pretty much sums it up for you. The map certainly has potential but it requires a good deal more work to bring the quality up. Check out some of the other DOD stuff posted up here and on the official DOD forums. Compare your style with theirs and try to work out how to improve. Quote
FrieChamp Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Mino's post does sound a bit harsh for a welcome, but his points are valid. Then again I think we've all seen far worse and although it's a long way to a masterpiece, if you are willing to improve and put more focus on realism and attention to detail your next map will already look a lot better! IR Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 mino's post prety much sums up my thoughts, theres alot of diffrence between buildings in a sense of you had a few idea's for some and then needed to stichs them together with random underdeveloped buildings or atleast thats what it feels/looks like to me. but still for a first or so map you did well. btw unless you really need the fog for fps and tried everything else in the book. heavy fog is a big nono for mp maps, it aint fun if you cant see whats shooting at you Quote
