JamesL
http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/ Some stuff there that I had been told was gonna run, but in fact has 'issues'. ThreeSpeech says 1,782 of 2,451 PS2 games released in PAL regions will work on the new kit. God of war (both) play fine. As does Shadow of the Colossus and FFXII (minor issues). Woohoo. ReNo
Most of the biggies seem to work in some capacity, and its a much better list than my initial expectations had built up. Perhaps not quite the number of games Phil had us believe recently though, as there are so many duplicates in there and a whole lot have issues. Will be interesting to see what qualifies as a minor issue and what qualifies as noticable issue - I hope everything that places at all on the list is at least still playable start to finish. There are a few worries though. Firstly, some games listed only work if you have the right release of it. For example there are several FFVIII's listed in the PS1 games which people seem happy about through the internets, but I was worried by the presence of "(SPA)" after the name. Sure enough, I checked the product codes, and it seems my UK version of the game isn't listed. FFVII isn't listed whatsoever, either, and neither are a few PS2 games I own (GT4 being the most obvious). Grandia only has disc 2 listed as compatible, which obviously isn't of much use either. I doubt I'll use it all that often so I'm hardly upset, but then I said that about the 360 and PS2 and I have played a fair few old games on both. Will be a while before a PS3 joins my collection anyway though, so its quite possible the BC support will be even larger by then.
Thrik
Bleh, what a load of dog arse. I think I'll just keep my PS2 mini around (it's small enough anyway) and use that rather than spend time worrying about whether or not game X that I fancy playing works or not. It's a shame the backwards compatibility is now shit as the PS2 had particularly good compatibility that actually improved the texture rendering and shit in PS1 games. Taylor
More will come with the firmware updates. But some areas of the initial launch do look rather bleak: No FF7 and the others all have issues except the port of FFV. I can hear the cries of fanboys from here. And while much more cult and expected of neglect: Disgaea 2 is sitting in major problems. Since it’s such a simple game graphics wise I would assume this comes from the two NTSC FMV* movies, as they say NTSC signal and FMV will generally cause corruption (thankfully neither of these movies are for end-sequences, this certainly won’t be the case for most games). * Koei really are lousy at localisation. They can’t be bothered to change movie format so it just plays black and white if your TV can’t support it. And on the first one they cut out the entire Japanese soundtrack** so they could put it on a CD, which never boots because the PS2 doesn’t like them. Nice job. ** But kept fucking Tsunami Bomb in there from the US release.
Mazy
I kinda learned my lesson after the 360 and realized just how little backwards compatibility means to me. My old Xbox was fried with a totally broken DVD drive, so initially the lack of dependable BC was like a huge letdown, but after having had the console for little over a year I've only played about 1-2 hours of old Xbox games, and thats even with the fact that I bought most games for the Xbox in the previous generation. Now people are going to whine like hell for now, but come back in a couple of months time and most people will have forgot all about it, at least if they manage to get a decent release schedule up and running so they can cover up their shite BC But obviously the real issue is that Europe is getting raped right from the beginning, and they're getting away with it. But as long as it plays God of War 2 then its fine
FrieChamp
2nd good thing I heard about the PS3 after "Home"..still not worth it to me yet, Guitar Hero 2 is coming out for the 360 next month and although I'd love to play some God of War I will just do it in the office I think... JamesL
Our office got their PS3 and games given out yesterday afternoon (except me I am poor and couldn't afford one even discounted). We have been trying out a bunch of the games that are rated 1 star on the BC listings and I am happy to report that even with these games we have been struggling to find any significant problems. The worst I have seen in the 1 star rated stuff is stuttering video during cutscenes. Certainly none of the missing parts of environment, rendering in black and white or other nastiness that the doomsayers have been coming out with. Thrik
They're not exactly cheap, even with a discount I'd imagine. ¬¬

Ginger Lord
The only way I could see myself getting a PS3 would be if I ended up working for a company that made games for it and it alone. Else I can safely say I will never get one. Not one bit of it appeals to me.
Thrik
Only thing about it that currently appeals to me is some racing game that looked quite great and of course Metal Gear Solid 4. If it lost MGS they'd probably lose a massive portion of buyers.
Mazy
At one point, they will get an exclusive title (Apart from MGS4, however long that stays on the PS3) thats gonna make it interesting. Right now its dull as fuck tho Getting one anyway
Taylor
It's easily going to be the strongest console this generation, but I'm waiting until there's a game I must play before I get mine - probably Square using Blu-Ray to its fullest and creating their dream game, with 40 hours of non-stop cutscenes.*
ReNo
I'm surprised there is such utter disdain for the system amongst us here. I appreciate that Sony have fucked up their public image with some of the worst marketing blunders I've heard of over the past year or two, but the fact is it is still a gaming system that has some unique titles. I'm not buying one right now because I can't afford it, and likewise with the Wii, but I still want both. Motorstorm is enough to make me want one - it looks like an awesome game and since the PS3 is the only way to play it, that makes me want a PS3. I'm the sort of gamer who buys a system for one game though; maybe that isn't exactly the norm.
