theiggsta Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Hey Everyone, Well for a fun project I decided to post some questions to you guys and see what the various responses were. This is part of a research report im doing as an article for a game website and getting your feedback and info will help in the research. So below is a task, please respond as best you can and be to the point. Task: Please post what you would consider a game "blunder" in the history of games. To better define a "blunder", it would be a situation which has become so fouled up (some would call it FUBAR) that it is a total disaster which could have been avoided. In otherwords, someone or something "fucked up" badly. If you can think of more than one, try to list them in any order you want. I am trying to compile a list of these historical problems and do research on them to findout why, etc. Thanks in advance for your posts and the fun ill have reading about them. Also try to keep the discussions out fo the list, facts only please. -iggy Quote
von*ferret Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 the ONLY one I know of, is the loss of Valve's source. Quote
Minos Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 steam fucked everything up ! Valve knew that it'd be a pain to 56k users, it was bugous etc... etc... but even though they closed won. editing - and oh, forgot to say. It was veeery simple to play HL or mods before steam, this is one of the reasons for the success of them imo. It was just install - play online - find a server and voi-la ! This doesnt happen with steam Quote
Tequila Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 I suppose the leak of early Doom 3 code didn't go down well, although compared to Valve's problem it was a raindrop in the sea. Quote
JynxDaddy Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 The n64 game 'Space Station Silicon Valley' the last secret item thing to collect was bugged and you just walked through it, forcing you to cheat to get 100%. That REALLY pissed me off. Quote
wacko Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 That Duke Nukem game...hmm i forget what ist even going to be called... and how the president of 3Drealms every so often (like once a week ) gets on there user to user forums and says, " its going to come out soon"... He has been saying that for like 10 years LOL. I think anything related to a companies ramping up of a game and then 10 years later they hit the market. OR on how in grand turismo 3 you can only get 98% of the game completed because they took out the last part of the game and then never changed the fact that it was need to get a 100% Quote
ctswin Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Nintendo not backing the CD based console which became the Playstation oh and to the DNF thing, I have never seen George say it'll be out soon on the forums, always says WID Quote
FrieChamp Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Daikatana. The development took ages, it was extremely hyped and couldn't meet up to the expectations in any way. This happened with a few other games as well, but Daikatana was especially in the focus of the media because star game designer John Romero was in charge of it. He had to sell his Ferrari on ebay and after making next gen ego shooters for years he had to make games for handheld PCs and mobiles. That game was quite a disaster for him. Quote
JynxDaddy Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 When John Romereo imported that romainian cam whore he met on the internet so he could get laid. Quote
InsaneSingingBlender Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 that one game, i think it was called majestic or something. it was really hyped and pc gamer had a cover story on it. it sounded reeeeaaal cool. it was where the game would call you and fax you things because you gave it info when you installed it. it was supposed to be a really immersive mystery game. but they had problems in the beta and shut it down. KidDynamite Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 Duke Nukem Forever, then next blunder is Tribes 2 release where there was about 20 patches in the first week alone, then after awhile my sierra patcher utility was out of date and i had to patch the patcher... Quote
Taylor Posted August 2, 2004 Report Posted August 2, 2004 The absence of a "warning: addictive" label on Disgaea. But more to the point, why the developers of that game did not decide to improve the graphics engine, it is so blatantly a game first intended for the PS1 that did not undergo changes when they changed systems. Even increasing the resolution would’ve helped enormously. The sprite characters (despite their animations being very low on frames), were appealing in their own way, though, changing those to 3d models probably would’ve made it fugly. If they had made it contain more graphical prowess that game would've got a lot more players, and it's gameplay is extremely addictive. It could've been a SUPER MEGA HAPPY FUN HIT rather than a "sleeper hit" Quote
KidDynamite Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 blunder; GeorgeB thinking he is still in game dev. Quote
