Thrik Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 I think the best answer to questions like these is to go to Dell and just order the highest spec gaming machine. Quote
zaphod Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 you would have to be pretty loaded and liberal with your money then, I think a top specced dell xps is in the upper 4k range. Quote
dissonance Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 the only reason i know about this stuff is 'cause i work at a computer store. well, no, what the reps tell us is laced with bullshit, although the AMD rep is fairly attractive (remy: i know what you're thinking, and I don't mean the old Asian lady). i just upgraded my box myself, and got an Athlon x2 4800+ (bigger cache than the 4600), a 7900gtx (512mb, woo), and an ASUS A8N32-SLI. the only argument I have is that there's a problem with the motherboard's bios (and that of ASUS's P4 equivilent) than won't let me boot into linux without turning off the IDE controler. that wouldn't be too bad if I had a sata dvd drive, but i dont. this might be helpful, as well: http://www.techpowerup.com/cpudb also have a look at the gpudb if you need. Sindwiller Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 I'm running a Conroe E6600 (or also called "Core 2 Duo", for you guys, who aren't digging so much into HW) and a 7950GX2 (i've already heard your opinion about SLI ^^) and its great. I can only recommend those Conroes! I can listen to music, let SETI@Home calculate some shit and model with Blender at the same time without problems. Even though: The second core isn't working (damn non-SMP kernel) Quote
zaphod Posted November 22, 2006 Author Report Posted November 22, 2006 well I finally got the machine delivered. The box it came in was huge and I thought that was wierd since I didn't really bundle anything with it but when I opended the box and saw haw huge the tower is I was blown away. I can literally put my keyboard ontop of the case and comfortably type on it like it's a desk. It's incredibly big and heavy. So far I have only had a chance to run the prey and quake 4 demos on it but it handled those with all settings maxed at 1600x1200 like a champ with no noticeable slowdown. I can't wait to get all my game on there and really put it through it's paces. Quote
Fletch Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 Load up Company of Heroes on full blast and see how well it handles that beast. Quote
Ginger Lord Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 On a skirmish, 4 v 4 with all the AI on expert. Nothing like a row of 8 Calliope's firing at once. Quote
zaphod Posted November 22, 2006 Author Report Posted November 22, 2006 will do, I'll probably take some screenshots too. I'm tempted to lug my 30 incher home just to take some 2560x1600 maxed settings screenshots Quote
