Pericolos0 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 yup, i was sortoff considering getting bf2142 but this kind of shit pissed me off .. I want my games made with love, not greed Quote
Sindwiller Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Quake Wars is looking like the more appealing of the two Indeed. I will definitely get it. Not only because of the engine. It looks like fun and the game concept looks very appealing to me. I love BF2 and i loved Enemy Territory and UT2k4 with it's Onshlaugt-Mode. Can't wait for it Quote
Fletch Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 "In the latest CGW podcast, they received retail boxed copies of BF 2142. When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads. Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware shit. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too)." I think "FUCK OFF!" is a good response to that! Having been following the media more carefully, Quake Wars is looking like the more appealing of the two. I don't know if you guys have seen the videos on gametrailers.com, but the engineer deploys buildings in an RTS-like fashion and everything. It looked really good, while BF2142 looks a bit too much like Battlefield 2. I guess I'll see since I'll inevitable get both anyway. Some DICE employees have posted to say that it only tracks how many ingame ads you render per session and doesn't track internet usage outside of the game. So I'm torn. I'm inclined to believe DICE, yet I distrust EA. Quote
Zeta Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Well that has 100% put me off buying the game. And if the lag / stuttering issues that prevaid every online server are as abundant in the full game as they are in the demo, I won't be purchasing either. Quote
NykO18 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Finally, I can confirm that this game is much more fun with guys who knows what teamplay means. Quote
mabufo Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 It's going to be exactly the same game... just a different setting. Quote
Grinwhrl Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Quake wars does look much better, but man, its not out till summer! Although after reading that I'm not sure if I want to buy it now but probably will anyway, heh. I like the game. Quote

dissonance Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Well that has 100% put me off buying the gameyup. and i even have computer that can run it now. shame. Quote
Grinwhrl Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I dont really care, its not going to hurt you in any way, steam already does it Wow does it, and many other companies, its the future of garabge media! Quake Wars will probably do it too. Quote
Fletch Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I got it today, and I'm pretty happy with it. The weapons work a lot better than the demo weapons (the sniper rifle actually hits people!) and the leveling system actually seems better designed to reward quality playing vs spam tactics. Also, people seem to have settled down when it comes to the new vehicles, they tend to actually use them effectively vs running off and playing with them. Plus, they seem to have combined my two favorite classes (spec ops and sniper), so I'm very happy with my newfound death bringing. Quote
misterbister Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Everybody talks about the weapons and the walkers... What about teamplay? I find it quite interesting that no one ever talks about the parts that i think is the best improvements. Me and my friends have been playing Battlefield 2 together as a squad since the game came out and we have become quite a tight team. Since they removed all the weak classes, its easier to assemble a complete squad. The new unlock system makes everything so much more fun. We can now make a much more specialized and efficient squad. During the Beta, it looked like this: Buddy 1 played as an engineer with AA-capabilities and specialized on minedropping (he had loads of really nasty mines in his arsenal) in case we needed to defend a flag/silo. Buddy 2 played as a Recon with stealth capabilities so he could sneak up to a tank and deliver some C4 without taking bigger risks. He also worked as an excelent scout. Buddy 3 often played the class that was needed at the moment. Hopefully we can make him be a support with all the defensive unlocks. I almost always plays as squadleader, so i had all the squad leader unlocks. I played as assault and made sure that no one in my squad was injured, and could revive anyone who died. I was also equipped with a very, very heavy assault rifle with a small rocket launcher attached, just to make sure that no infantry got in our way. During real intense attacks, i could plant a beacon so my squad could spawn on it, even if i died. If we needed more gunpower than we had, i could respawn with a combat drone, which can fire at enemies, even if im ducking under cover. Im very excited with all the new possibilities that comes with just this part of the game, but there is more! Since DICE wanted people to play in squads more than they did in BF2, You actually get rewarded with lots of bonus points when playing in a squad and killing people near your squadleaders order. If you play good, this can be very rewarding. I remember one instance during a match in the DEMO where our squad got 92 squd bonus points for good teamplay. Im not sure if theese points counts as careerpoints aswell, but i do know that you get temporary unlocks in the battlefield for collecting theese squad bonus points. The weapons stay as long as you play on the same server. This is great since you can actually try out an unlock before unlocking it for real. Do i need to express further how exciting i think this system is for me and my squadbuddies? Dont think so . Quote
Polaris Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 So they are using ratings to engourage teamplay? Why did they not do this with bf2? Quote
Defrag Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 God damnit, I suggested the bonus squad shit for BF2 on the EA UK forums nearly a year ago and they didn't implement it in BF2. Then again, I realised soon after that their support for BF2 patching was basically non-existent from a gameplay perspective... There's so much dumb shit in that game regarding scoring. You get the same amount of points for killing a tank with 3 AT missiles as you do for killing a single infantry guy. Hmm what's easier? Also, you get 2 points for a revive even when a tank is sitting next to you to re-kill you .2 of a second later. I could go on all day. #3: Lack of reward for good squad leaders. Squad leaders should be given an extra point or two when their squad members make x teamwork points. When I play squadleader, I usually don't try to capture flags / defend flags directly, but stay back instead. As a result, I don't get as many kills or flag captures compared to normal; so my score actually suffers for playing in a fashion that benefits my team/squad. The ~average score per round per person is usually in the region of ~20-40 (good players can make 50- 100 each round in my experience, but they're exceptions rather than the norm, so please don't say "oh but I get 80 points per round Razz" as the majority make a fraction of that). If you have a full squad (not including squadleader), that would add up to 5 * ~30 = 150 points. Probably 1/3 of those points are teamwork points (50), the rest are combat. If squadleaders were awarded one point for every five squadmember spawns on the squadleader's position, and something like one point for every 5 teamplay points their squad members scored, it'd add up to a decent return and reward those who play squad leader to help their team. For example, at the end of a game, a squad leader might have his regular score plus 30 spawns (+6 points at 1 point per 5 spawns) and 10 additional teamplay points (50 team points achieved by squad, squadleader gets one point per five his squad members earn) giving a further 16 points to his score. If the squad leader is poor, then no-one will spawn on him (as they'll be dead all the time and can't get the bonus) and there'll be less flag neutralises/caps achieved by their squad, as they will effectively be operating under their own steam. This is just an idea; the numbers / bonuses were just to illustrate that you could implement something that would reward squad leaders fairly if they played in an effective / considerate manner. IMO there's real potential for this sort of thing. You might have to disallow things like kill driver assists counting towards the point total if the squad is blackhawk personing etc. I'm sure the boffins at Dice could come up with something more concrete.
