skdr Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Holy crap! Is there anything you can't do? That looks superb. Is this all painted from scratch? Or are those ref photos boosting the background? Great work! Quote
OrnateBaboon Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Great work I was looking into this kind of thing before. Found a good tutorial on it. Have you got the original pics to show? http://www.seb4d.com/tutorials/Mattepai ... nglish.htm Quote
Pericolos0 Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 it looks cool, but the colors in the foliage look artificial to me. It looks a little bit like a black and white photo that was colored afterwards. The tree is also darker than the foggy looking rocks, making it appear as if its in front of it. Quote
Minos Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Nice stuff, I should try matte painting again some time. Quote
Zacker Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 I see skdr already wrote what I thought when I saw the picture. Is there anything which you can't do? I do not know a lot about matte painting, but I can see that yours there look pretty cool. The sky seems to be a blend of every possible weather though, maybe stick to either sunshine or black clouds? Quote
Hourences Posted September 21, 2006 Author Report Posted September 21, 2006 Peris I fixed the tree and rock brightness and re uploaded it. Zacker I had a dark sky first but people were bitching at me that the dark sky didnt fit the brightness of the terrain so I dumped the dark sky. I tried to add more yellow in the sky but didnt work out either. original three photos Quote
JeanPaul Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 That looks awesome, are you willing to make wallpaper sized renders? Quote
kleinluka Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 nice!!!! really good piece. my only complaint would be the bright spots in the clouds and the sunrays coming from them are very muddy and grey and not very nice looking. I love the little castle and the S-shaped road leading to it (very spooky and mysterious, yet inviting) and the birds you added above that tree are a nice touch. Good work!!! Quote
von*ferret Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I think you have a great understanding of light in the clouds, just polish up what klein said Quote
Patrick_H Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 To give my critique, for what it is worth... Attractive composition, especially for a matte painting, in that there is a nice progression of space ranging from the stronger foreground elements like the tree at left, through the middle ground including the castle and boat, ending in the distance with some good atmospheric perspective in the far mountains. My problems with this piece are related to the new lighting scheme you have chosen for the scene. Normally when overcast skies fall over a landscape, the colors in the terrain become more muted and less saturated. Its not too far off, but colors of the trees in the middle ground are too warm to be believable, given the amounts of grey and cool colors in the sky. It is not a big problem, but it is worth noting. Very pretty overall though. Quote
kleinluka Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 I agree with you Patrick, but it might have just been an artistic choice to put sky and landscape in contrast to eachother so much (cold/warm contrast). I think it gives the picture a really nice "old painting" look. Quote
Patrick_H Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Yeah, its only a minor point. I only call attention to it because when the work is that nice it doesn't hurt to consider the possibilities. Hourences, if you are not familiar with it already then you might enjoy looking at the works of Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School artists. I find it very inspirational...and you will notice the dramatic use of a blasted, broken tree in the foreground of some of the compositions. http://www.abcgallery.com/C/cole/cole.html Quote
