zaphod Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 I have always been interested in internet communities, and in particular - community generated content. Hence the reason I was a part of mapcore, and hence the reason for a new project of mine and my brother, http://www.devbump.com devbump is a clone of the popular "digg" method of posting news, information, any any interesting things on the web in general. However, in contrast to digg, devbump is all about sharing articles of information that are of interest and use to us game developers. Here is the way it works; 1. any tom dick or harry finds something neat and interesting on the web related to game development. 2. tom dick or harry submits the story to devbump, the story shows up in the "qeued stories" sectionhttp://gravatar.com/ 3. other devbump users browse the qeued stories section of the site and "bump" or vote for stories they think deserve to be shared with the masses. 4. once any article gets enough votes, it automatically gets published on the front page of the site. I have been really interested in the process ever since I discovered digg. I really think the totally non-controlled, community moderated process is really interesting and I have been wanting to apply it to the game developer audience ever since. Me and my brother eeenmachine have finally gotten everything together and to the point where it would be usefull to have a small number of users try and use the site. Things aren't 100% done, there are still some small css tweaks we will be making to the site over the next week, polishing bits and pieces, but the overall functionality should be working. Over the last 4 days I have been scouring the net for gamedev related items I found interesting and would appreciate cataloged all in one site. There are 6 pages of qeued news storied just waiting for users to pick and choose and get onto the front page. If you would like to be a part of devbump, all you have to do is register for the site, and click on "look for stories" then read through what people have submitted and choose what interests you, and click the "bump" button. Then, if you stumble across interesting gamedev related items on the web that you think other people would find interesting, submit it to devbump. Also, feel free to use the comments system to chat with each other about specific stories. From the second I started musing about creating this site, I have been thinking about mapcore and it's users as a springboard to get it started, I hope that you check it out and find it to be something you would visit every day to find neat stuff related to what you are interested in. quick note: I know you guys all love avatars, the system we are running uses http://gravatar.com/ for avatars, so just use the same email address for both and your avatar should show up, though it can take awhile for the gravatar people to rate your icon and the have it start showing up. eeenmachine Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 Yeah, please ignore any odd colors or text formatting errors. The bitch of a css file is being tweaked whenever I have the time. Also the javascript sneak/spy seems to work in some browsers on some machines, but not in the same browser on a different machine, so I still have to sort that out. Quote
Furyo Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 I really think this has potential. Great idea, and great job thus far Quote
eeenmachine Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 At the moment it takes 5 bumps for a story to get published, so they should start appearing on the front page soon... Quote
skdr Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 This is cool, registered! edit: make the links open in new window/tab please. Quote
zaphod Posted September 7, 2006 Author Report Posted September 7, 2006 sweet, our first front page story is "Tutorial: Hard Surface Texture Painting" still haven't had our first non-me submitted story yet *edit* scratch that, first submitted story by mr. skdr Quote
skdr Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 Commenting is broken or is it just me that the comment arranging is wierd? Quote
zaphod Posted September 7, 2006 Author Report Posted September 7, 2006 I think it arranges it backwards to how we are used to the forums maybe? it might also take the comment rating into account Quote
eeenmachine Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 Looks to be sorted by Rating, then Time Posted, with replies nested to their parent comments. Quote
zaphod Posted September 7, 2006 Author Report Posted September 7, 2006 This is cool, registered! edit: make the links open in new window/tab please. done Quote
eeenmachine Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 done Don't act like you know how to change the code yourself little artist! Quote
zaphod Posted September 8, 2006 Author Report Posted September 8, 2006 once we get a front page full of stories and we finalize the css and make sure everything is working in all browsers then I am going to go on a campaign to corral more users from other communities. Had to give mapcore the first shot at it though! Quote
