Fletch Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12852 "Let's say your Wii is connected to the Internet in a mode that allows activation on a 24-hour basis. This would allow Nintendo to send monthly promotional demos for the DS, during the night, to the Wii consoles in each household. Users would wake up each morning, find the LED lamp on their Wii flashing, and know that Nintendo has sent them something," Iwata explained. "They would then be able to download the promotional demo from their Wii's to their Nintendo DS's. This will, of course, be possible in gaming stores too, but I think users will enjoy being able to do this within their homes. The key merit here is having promotional material delivered to your home, instead of having to go collect it yourself." Let's take this a step farther. Let's say you have a DS game that involves customization or collecting things (Animal Crossing, Pokemon, any RPG or adventure really). You could turn it on in your living room and your Wii would say "Oh hey, you just got the new RPG game. Cool." then a few days later, you turn on your Wii and get a nice little message that says "Hey, thanks for buying our new RPG game, we hope you like it. Here's a Level 20 foam cowboy hat. Turn on your DS and we'll download/unlock it for you." Take that Sony. Quote
ReNo Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Bit of a nothing feature if you ask me. If I care about a game that allows downloadable content, then I'll check for it. Hell, with things like steam update news or games auto-updating on Xbox Live, plenty is already being done in this department. Sure it's quite nice that it does it all when your console is off, but not what I'd call a key feature in the upcoming console war. Quote
Thrik Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 According to Iwata they're going to try and make sure there's something new to download each and every day, and will have people dedicated to this. I presume it'll only affect first-party titles and won't be anything massive each time, but still, it's a nice sentiment. Nintendo's console having online capabilities period really excites me to be honest, though — nevermind all the extras. I mean, Mario Kart online? Yes fucking please. All this stuff is really exciting considering the estimated launch price, which is incredibly affordable. If it were like the same price as the other consoles (lol PS3) I probably wouldn't be so excited, but the whole package of the Wii in general is really enticing. A lot of bang for your buck, as they say in a country that isn't mine. The deciding factor will be whether or not they can get the third-party support en masse that they're going for to take advantage of all this stuff. Nintendo has said over and over again that they've learnt their lessons from the GameCube and that the new leadership will change things, but only time will tell in seeing if they can reverse the reputation damage that the aforementioned console did with the mainstream SonyBoys. It's another thing to update a completely different platform through your console. To me this is a killer app because it actually gets me to touch my system more often, just to see what new fun shit I can play. Quote
ReNo Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 Why is it another thing entirely? I honestly don't see why getting updates to your DS through the Wii is of much importance, and certainly not of much surprise. I'm pretty sure Sony are also doing something along the same lines with the PSP/PS3, given that they frequently tout the connectivity between them. You can already get updates through the Wifi connection on the DS anyway can't you? I know you can with the PSP, so it's hardly something staggeringly new, though hopefully Nintendo will actually put out content rather than putting in the feature and neglecting it entirely (*cough* PSP infrastructure mode *cough*). As I said, it's neat that it is done automatically and all, but I don't see how it's a particularly huge feature. Maybe I'm missing something though, I haven't read the article just yet after all, I'm just going off this thread. Quote
RD Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 Agree with Reno here. It is basically an interweb connection, which is nothing new. They just made up a new story surrounding the interweb connection. Quote
