ReNo
So for those who haven't noticed yet, at the pre-E3 Sony conference, the PS3's price point was announced. As many expected it is $499, though this is for the base model that comes with a 20Gb HDD. For those who want to go with a 60Gb HDD, it will set them back $599. Fairly hefty prices, but not really surprising. I don't think anybody figured it would be lower than $500, but a fair few thought higher, so its a relief if anything. The big surprise though was the updated controller. It looks exactly like the PS2 controller, but now with added gyroscope! That's right, both the PS3 and Wii have motion sensing control pads...intriguing stuff
von*ferret
what does that mean for gameplay?
ReNo
Who knows. People were thinking that cross platform games wouldn't be going to the Wii due to its use of a unique user input method, but with it having quite a lot in common with the PS3 controller now, maybe its a more likely thing? Not that the Wii's technical power can compete, but if low poly models, lower res textures, and simpler shaders are used, maybe it is a possibility. Could there be titles appearing on the PS3 and Wii, and missing out the 360? That's a scenario few would have imagined, and to be honest I still don't, but you never know! In terms of what the PS3 games will use the new controller method for - who knows? Depends on developer support really. They demonstrated Warhawk - an arcade flying game - to debut the new controller, and apparently it was "used like a flight stick" (though I can't imagine very comfortably!). More info will be hitting over the next hours and inevitably days.
Section_Ei8ht
yeah, but they forgot to mention what the $499 version would be lacking Hooray for Sony. They arent doing anything innovative. The controller is a rip off of the Wii and the dashboard is a rip off of the 360. Of course, this doesn't mean I wont pick one up when the price drops below $
Mazy
Seriously, that Spiderman font, what the fuck are they thinking. I was hoping they'd come to reason this time around and have gone back to the old PS font Guess I'll have to live with it :G
Fletch
$200 is my price point for consoles. I don't purchase above that. Quite frankly, if I've got $600 to blow, I'll use it as a down payment on this: Plus, I'm not putting any money into the goddamned HD-DVD vs Bluray fight. I'm just going to let the market pick a winner and wait for the tech price to come waaaaaaaaay down.
skdr
Does Sony have any OWN innovations and ideas? :-( They stole the X0 big media guide center button too. Here's a good article why Wii's controller is still better and why PS3 controller is not good for all games. http://revolution.ign.com/articles/705/705870p1.html
Mazy
Oh yeah that Warhawk demo of the gyro stuff in the PS3 controller was hilarious, looked like he had no control over it at all. But I think its a good decision they didnt go for the boomerang, not that I want to stay with the same controller forever, but it really did look stupid :G

Minos
There's no place for innovation in the games industry anymore guys.
Izuno
1) Thank god the new controller is not the boomerang. I like my dual shock style. 2) Vibration is a cool feature, but of late I've been turning it off cause it's getting way over used such as in LEGO star wars which is a great little game that even my girlfriend appreciates...but geez does it need that much feedback in the controller? So the PS3 will have some gyroscope functionality. Great. Let's hope someone makes a good game that uses it in a non crappy way. Remember eyetoy? We're all using that aren't we? 3) If the gyroscope stuff starts taking off, how long before Microsoft introduces a new controller that uses it? They would need a kick ass killer game that is a must have to get 360 owners to buy it. Then maybe 3rd party dev/pubs might make once exclusive PS3 games cross platform to include 360. Just a scenario, but you have to wonder if that could happen. 4) At $499 or $599 for the PS3, I'm probably going to buy a Wii as my second console unless the PS3 comes with something absolutely amazing to play that I absolutely must have. What game is that going to be?   5) Oh, I really do think there will be a redawn of innovation in gaming. For a while 3D was "it"...but now the suits think it's HD. HD is evolutionary, not revolutionary. It doesn't really allow for a whole new world of gaming...it just makes current gaming look nicer, have higher resolution, cooler visual effects etc... The more I think about it, the more I think the real innovation will be in the emmergent gameplay model that Spore could begin to unlock. 5 extra) Why is it so hard to revolutionize gaming? Well, there is only so much you can do with a flat, 2D surface displaying 3D images with a controller or keyboard input. Sure, the Wii and now PS3 input devices could help spark such a revolution, which I think both Nintendo and Sony are hoping for. But proof will come in the games, and don't be surprised if the first such gyroscope enabled PS3 game isn't all that revolutionary.
Gaz
When I get enough cash, I'm going to get the latest VR headset with HD mini screens (I saw some on a program about LG). And a pair of surround sound headphones, and take myself and my PC to a shed and live there for a few years playing oblivion or something equally emmersive But seriously, VR esq stuff can only be the next level of emersion, with some wacky controllers attached to your hands. Wii is the way forward If Dragon Quest has sword fighting with the wiimote, Im SO there!
The Postman
what does that mean for gameplay? For $599 + tax I better be getting a free blowjob and a jetpack with my purchase, that's all I can tell you right now.
