Polaris Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I doubt it will flop but there is the possibility that we might be disapointed, especially if you have very high expectations (HL2 ) Quote
Izuno Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I think the flop odds on Spore are rather low, too...though you never know until it we see more of it. However, given what I have seen and what I know about Wil Wright, I agree that's unlikely. But anyway, the whole concept of the procedural systems to drive gameplay is a very very cool idea. In fact, the focus on gameplay innovation over ever increasing realism in graphics actually has me more excited than anything else, I expect this to breath some innovation into the industry, and perhaps even a new type of strategy genre. If history has proven anything in gaming, it's that when something new becomes successful it is almost always copied. Doom spawned Dark Forces which was dubbed "Star Wars Doom" at first...and then FPS becomes a genre. Etc etc... to the point of all the GTA clones still being called "GTA clones" today when in fact maybe GTA spawned a new genre called "action/driving hybrid" or "sandbox game" or "open world game" or whatever. To that point, Mercenaries was sort of dubbed a GTA knock off, but you know, I love Mercenaries about 1000 times more than any GTA game. Spore could have the potential to create a new genre of strategy games that are more "emergent behavior". So I dubb Spore as the first "EBG"...Emergent Behavior Game. Can anyone think of any such game that has come before? Seriously, list em if you know em... Quote
dc-mike Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I want interstellar domination to be involved! home-made species battling it out online ftw! that would be so awesome Quote
von*ferret Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 I thought the term sandbox games was reserved for simulation games like SimCity or SimAnts. Quote
mike-0 Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Draw distance is like 2meters, cool! This doesnt even has a great graphics so what makes this game good in middle of next-gen games? "L0L R0fL tHoSe gRapHicS sUcK" Ever heard of "gameplay" you cs kiddy? Spore is one of the most interesting game projects of all times. Will Wright is really striking a new path with that game. keep it chill, bro Quote
ReNo Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 I think sandbox generally just refers to any game that avoids the standard linear progression model. If you aren't lead through the game by the hand but are instead left (for the most part) to your own devices, free to explore and progress as your own pace and via your own route, then it is valid to use the term sandbox. GTA is probably one of the clearest examples of sandbox gameplay I can think of. Quote
