kleinluka Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 From a design standpoint, creating one giant room is probably going to get you a lot of shitty entries. I like the idea of a contest, but I don't know how many people are going to be able to stick to the rules and still make a fun map. The point of a challenge is that it's CHALLENGING I think it's a great idea. Quote
KungFuSquirrel Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 Well, really, what does it matter if there's shitty entries? They won't win. Quote
Orpheus Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 Well, really, what does it matter if there's shitty entries? They won't win. Thanx Andrew. I wanted to say that, but I also want to keep this thread upbeat and happy. It wouldn't have sounded right if I had said that maybe. Quote
Bl1tz Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 OK, this is how I see it coming off. Use this as a guide. Everyone should know Mazemaster. I am sure that Nick won't mind me using him as an example. Anyway, you should know him. If you don't, do so cause he is one of the best out there. OK, pretend that Mazemaster is making Island_17 today, for this contest. He makes the entire map that you can see from the top of the light house. You are restricted to the top of the light house. You say to yourself, "Man, this is one fine looking map" End of story. Don't attempt to over complicate the contest. Now, expand that to whatever you want to make. I don't care if you made the Eiffel tower, or the pyramid of Giza.. You're only restricted to your imagination. If you think this is a contest for creating a usable map, forget it. This is 100% creativity, of the useless kind. Now, go vote, and join up... YOu know you want to. Fair enough, but I personally wouldn't want to play a map that isn't "usable" (fun.) When we did 100 brush mapping contests in the Quake community, the maps that won were the ones that had the best gameplay, because really, what's the point of making a level if it sucks to play it? Maybe it's just me, but I hate playing maps that are basically just big arenas unless that's the mod (and even then, stuff like Rocket Arena gets old after a short time) I certainly wish you good luck with your contest by all means I just don't think you're going to have many skilled mappers who want to make giant sealed-off rooms. Campaignjunkie Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 I think the point is to have fun making an entry, rather than actually striving to win the contest. Good gameplay, bad gameplay - oh well, just get off your ass and make something. Quote
Orpheus Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 I certainly wish you good luck with your contest by all means I just don't think you're going to have many skilled mappers who want to make giant sealed-off rooms. Do you have any idea how many skilled mappers I know now, who could have benefited from a contest like this back in 99/00? Do you have any idea how many skilled mappers I know now, who work for gaming on a professional level, who started off unskilled? Don't hand me that useless thinking bub. The idea is to have fun. If fun to you is only playing your creation, you have a bit to go yet on skill yourself. Quote
Orpheus Posted April 20, 2006 Author Report Posted April 20, 2006 I need people to vote in this new thread please.. Thanx. Quote

Orpheus Posted April 23, 2006 Author Report Posted April 23, 2006 On the front page of this site, the link still says "Classifieds" Here, it says "Mod recruitment" The thread isn't about mods, not really although all mods for HL are permitted within the competition. My concern is, the thread got more replies under classifieds than recruitment. I hope that no one feels its placement is a bad thing. Anyway, the competition is proceeding on schedule. I will post in depth details later today. Be good. Quote
ReNo Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 I don't really think it should have been in classifieds or mod recruitment (the forums underwent some name changes lately to better reflect their purpose, hence the new name), but is probably better in game industry discussion. Maybe a moderator will move it if they see your concern. Quote
Flight40 Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Like the Interlopers design challenges? Quote
Orpheus Posted April 25, 2006 Author Report Posted April 25, 2006 Two poll threads were taken at Snarkpit. The most popular results are now posted in the Official Snarkpit 2006 competition thread. Please take a moment to scan the guidelines and rules. You may reconsider joining afterward. Whether its to join, or to back out will be the only question that remains. Have a good day gents and thanx for taking the time to read the thread. Quote
Orpheus Posted April 27, 2006 Author Report Posted April 27, 2006 Thread died. I guess it didn't matter where it was located. *shrugs* Quote
