I've played Garry's Mod since version 6 and it was fun but gets boring fast. Me and a friend usually had Fort Wars / Wooden Wars but Garry's Mod is too unstable and crashes a lot. It's nice to see Garry getting money for his hard work but I'm not going to buy it. Doesn't interest me no more. I've done all I can think of in it, got bored and impatient with it so I don't want to waste money on it.

That's what I'm saying. Modifications like DOD:Source and Sin Episodes, I understand their for pricing because of the content and time put into it. With a mod you basically goof around it? Eh.

And also, with about 9+ previously releases out there still, likely it's a small majority really who'd buy the newest one. I hope garry tells us the number of accounts sold the first week, I'm interested to hear.

Worth money? For some people maybe...

Worth $10 to me? No.

Paying for mods seems like an alright concept to me. Provided the creators actually put commitment into providing a finished product and continued support for that product, I've got no problem with it.

More power to him I say. £6 is like virtually nothing.

If it means the mod continues development when it wouldn't have otherwise and he gets a few bucks in the process then good.

I don't see all the fuss about it. He worked his balls off making it, so good luck to him.

I'm not really too impressed with valve cashing in on a 'fun' mod (given that the traditional mod stance was that if valve bought it, they'd sell it retail style but also leave it as free to the people who already own a copy of the game on which the mod is based), but I can't blame Garry for it; I'd do the same thing myself if I were in his position.

The only questionable aspect is the fact that Garry took donations and grants donators privileges.. and now all of that will probably be kicked away. This is a reason why I feel people should always think long and hard before giving anything in return for donations (as it puts a different complexion on things, it becomes more like 'buying' under a different name) or indeed taking donations at all. It creates conflicts of interest, expectations of support and it also means, as Garry said, petition online will probably explode as a result of this decision. Of course it's easy for me to say this (regarding donations) though because I'm not in Garry's position and, while I'm not even close to rich (monitor is giving out and I can't afford a new one) I do live fairly comfortably considering I'm a student with a tiny bank loan and no job.

Still though, say you have donated and now you feel you've been jipped, it's only $10.

It's not so much that I care he's charging money for a mod, it's just that this sets a really stupid precedent. Now every mod that think's they're tough shit is going to start trying to charge. Which means you're going to have more 15 year old mod leaders trying to screw people over for $200 bucks.

Yeah but that's been waiting in the wings for quite some time. I suppose this just formalises things. Garry's mod is somewhat different in that he coded pretty much all of it; it was a personal project that was in the right place at the right time and caught people's imaginations.

I totally agree that the whole "Let's make a pretentious studio name and act like we're big time-charlies who want to sell the mod" is totally irritating and fucks up the mod community to a degree, though.

There's nothing like seeing people bail out of your mod and join another without so much as a "goodbye", or other mods attempting to poach your team members... (the latter has happened to us a few times). Potentially putting money on the line just makes it a lot worse.

Additionally: I'm sure development studios who've had to pay for a license will be delighted to see modders being handed them for nothing (albiet for a larger cut of the sales). I wouldn't be surprised if you see modders and small indie developers making more profit on certain projects compared to full studios with large overheads and licensing costs who push out an poorly-received game. Whether that would be justice is another matter!

Yeah I don't think he worked that hard on it.

As much as it is a sandbox and goof-off mod, it has a lot of cool stuff in it that nobody else has done (or at least extended to the degree gmod has).

God I miss the days when mods were made for fun. I wish more of those 15 year old mod leaders understood that mod != retail.

Well..they can't. Because thats illegal unless Valve buys the rights to the mod ala CS, DoD and now Gmod.
