PS3 launching worldwide November 2006

Anybody else as surprised about this as me? I had pretty much gotten used to the thought that Sony was going to go the same old route with getting it out in Japan first, then a couple of months later in North America and Europe a year after the Japanese launch. Really exciting news, even if you arent very interested in the PS3.

Also the harddrive news is pretty damn ace, certainly gives them some edge on Microsoft, but it sounds like its going to come with the console which means they're going to lose even more money on it (which would mean over the $999 estimated loses thats been floating around until now, based on the Blu-ray drive).

Still kind of sceptical about the online stuff, feels like its enterted their agenda way too fast (after the 360 made big on it). I still doubt that it'll be any good if its free, but who knows.

Thoughts? :)

Wow, I didn't expect a worldwide launch whatsoever. Nice to see Europe not getting shafted so much these days :) Confusing talk about maybe not including the NECESSARY HDD in the package (what next, no controller included?) - what sort of prices that could escalate the required purchases at retails to could be quite frightening. I imagine it will come bundled though, it doesn't really make much sense not to.

Hasn't MS said that they are planning on releasing larger capacity HDDs in the future, which is one of the benefits of it being so easily switched? If so they could try and undermine that advantage of Sony's by releasing ones in even larger still flavours, or offering different console SKUs with different sized HDDs.

The fact that this news has come before 360 stock can meet demand, may mean a lot of people who were still looking to buy a 360 but couldn't might now wait for the PS3. Will certainly be interesting to see what the games look like over the coming months before I make my decision.

Nintendo Revolution FTW

Indeed, we all know PS3 will outsell it, but damn Revolution will be damn fun, great games.

As DP said on the DoD Forums, give me a reason to get a PS3 without including the words "Metal Gear" or "Konami".

Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Jaffe, Ueda.

:P

That said, I'm still not holding out high hopes for the PS3 just yet... I'll get one eventually and enjoy some great games on it, to be sure, but I think we all know by now what happens when you take Sony at their word :P

Again I'm definitely more excited about the Revolution than the PS3 (hard not to be), but I'm far from totally sold on the concept of the Revolution. They really need to do a good showcase of it at this E3 and really provide people with an example that people will talk about after E3 (much like Killzone 2 was Sony’s piece last year). Otherwise I think it'll still seem more like a funny gimmick than an actual enhancement of the gaming experience, even though I'm quite sure it will be.

Anyway, regarding the HDD then Sony has totally played it right if they're following this through. Microsoft's way was a great example of how NOT to have hard drives integrated with consoles. The whole point is that everybody has the same setup and developers know what people have to work with when they're developing stuff. Adding it as a necessary accessory would be a big mistake as well, last thing they need is having different packs like the 360 did just to make it look cheaper, even though it looks like they really could use it :)

Plenty announced but few have been really seen - check out last year's E3 PS3 stuff, even if most of it was just marketing videos rather than any representation of what the games will be like. Think sequels to all the big PS2 exclusives - MGS, Tekken, Gran Turismo, Killzone, Devil May Cry - mixed in with some new stuff like Fatal Inertia, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Lair, etc...

I dug what I saw of I-8 (or whatever the final name will be), whatever the Insomniac shooter will end up as, and it seemed to be actual gameplay no less (it wasn't as flashy as, say, killzone and didn't get much hype).

i don't care what the premise of the games are at this point for PS3 launch just as long as they (1) play great (2) show killer next gen graphics improvement. #1 > #2, but I still want to see stuff that looks good so my friends in my life who tell me I waste time playing video games can start to gawk at it. so far they haven't been gawking at my mastery of Hexic on 360.
