ReNo Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Got a couple of new albums recently; The Kooks - Inside In/Inside Out The debut (I think) album by The Kooks, this is a nice mix of playful indie rock with a bit of ska influence. Ska seems to be seeping into quite a few of these Brit rock bands lately - Arctic Monkeys, the Ordinary Boys (well, thats less seeping, more pouring!), The Kooks - and its a trend that gets my seal of approval My highlights from this album are intro song "Seaside" (short acoustic track that doesn't really fit with the rest, but is a beautiful little song in my opinion), "See The World" (which I think is a single or something, and understandably so), "She Moves In Her Own Way" (a fairly light but upbeat romantic song that, frighteningly, makes me think "Cliff Richard" in a good way) and "If Only" (probably the hardest, rockiest of the lot). Vocally, and musically at times, they remind me a lot of Rx Bandits, and probably the most obvious other comparisons would be the Arctic Monkeys or Razorlight, so if you like any of them then do yourself a favour and check it out. Hundred Reasons - Kill Your Own I'm a bit disappointed with this so far. Granted, I've only given it a couple of listens through, but it seems to be far less jumpy and "fun" than their previous efforts. All the reviews I've seen are pretty glowing, saying this is their best so far, but I just can't see it. It seems to me like they are perhaps moving away from the emo/nu-metal mix that that had before and going more for straightforward rock, which makes some songs sound like they belong on a Foo Fighters album rather than here. Not that any of it is bad - its a pretty good album to be fair - it just isn't really what I was hoping for. On first listens through both their prior albums there were 3 or 4 songs that jumped out with hugely catchy choruses or uplifting rythms, but nothing here did that for me. Hopefully it will grow on me in time. My picks for now are intro track "Broken Hands", fastest offering "Live Fast, Die Ugly" which is pretty much their most aggressive song to date (as far as I can recall anyway), and "Feed The Fire" which is probably the most Foo's esque but still one of the better songs. Defrag Posted March 22, 2006 Report Posted March 22, 2006 Morrissey's new album. It's pretty good! "There are explosive kegs / between my legs / dear God, please help me" Quote
Fletch Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Went on a music binge the alst few days: Arctic Monkeys - I'm happy with this, but I feel like it might grow old quickly (cough M.I.A. cough). But it does make good driving music. All of their songs seem to blur too much into each other. Guillemots - Much happier with this. They've got some really good musicla arrangemetns to back up their lyrics. Plus, busting out a jazz saxaphone always makes me happy. KT Turnstall - I like female singer songwriters, thus I like this. No I don't think that makes me gay. Dressing in all black and wearing mascara before going to a concert to run around and bounce off other guys on the other hand... But I'm getting off point. For those of you in your 20s that need some good female friendly music, look no further. Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics - Hoooooooly Shit! I love the Flaming Lips, and this album makes me happy on so many levels. The Pink Robots have been subdued. Now it's all out war against the magicians. Editors - Been there. Done that. Nothing to see. Quote
ReNo Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 I like KT Tunstall too, but I'm also slightly biased because she comes from just over the river from me Also, a band I like (and my mate is the cousin of the lead singer in) called "Amplifico" support her quite a bit and their lead singer recently did some backing vocals for her. Check out Amplifico if you like KT Tunstall - they are just a small band but they are a nice sort of jazz pop mix along a similar vein to KT. http://www.amplifico.net/ Quote
D3ads Posted March 23, 2006 Report Posted March 23, 2006 Editors - Been there. Done that. Nothing to see. I think they're really good, granted they're nothing new but they're the best out of all this NME indie bands that get so much exposure these days. I admit that I listened to their album and found it boring though, one or two songs will do ta. KT Turnstall is dire... Quote
