Aftermath: April 24th

I just finished HL2 for the first time today. I started playing it yesterday out of the blue, and picked up where I left off in January of last year. I found the later half of the game to be more enjoyable than the prior half, obviously, because the earlier half made me drop the game for what I thought was forever.

So you're not playing aftermath for the sole reason that its on Steam only? your loss :P

Because Steam is fucking balls, throws up errors all the time, I can't even get offline mode running and sometimes I can't even play the game because Steam servers are down. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I shouldn't need to have to piss about with some external program just to play a fucking game, every other game I have is just straight install, HL2 takes bloody ages to setup right and then you've got to hope Steam doesn't decide to play up or else you'll be doing nothing. If I can find a patch that disables Steam I'll gladly play HL2 and it's mods, otherwise I can't be arsed at the moment.

Seriously, hardly anyone else has these complaints. Wouldn't it be smarter to try and fix things and keep rants to yourself rather than posting abuse on a forum.

There are loads of people who feel the same way as I do, I'd like to think it IS my machine but I dont think so. I'm having the machine upgraded at the moment anyway so I might give it another bash when I've got that back. As for trying to fix things, already went down that road to no avail...

Where's the abuse btw? :)

In all honesty, not that many people do complain about it anymore. It's fast becoming a standard way of playing games (last time I checked there were over seven third parties signed up to distribute via Steam, and EA and whatnot are introducing their own mandatory services for certain titles as we speak), and whether you like it or not the internet is going to become necessary for a lot of software to function in the near future.

Steam in particular is also a fantastic way of cracking down on warez, which is a very serious issue with pretty much all PC software in general at the moment, something which could very easily be a death sentence for smaller developers who put out innovative games. The public thinks "Oh, this game might be a bit weird so I'll full demo it ;) ;) ;)", they never bother buying it, the developer is fucked over. The old ways of stopping warez are obsolete and you have probably even circumvented them in the past yourself; new ways such as requiring something like Steam are stepping in.

It's not like Half-Life 2 doesn't quite clearly have "requires internet connection" on the back of the box, anyway. Why did you buy it if you're still living in the 1990s? That's six years ago, just to remind you. As of last year, over 55% of households in the UK alone have internet access, with three fifths of them on broadband -- I'd imagine that pretty much all gamers fall into that percentage. Complaining about things requiring net access is a "little" outdated my friend.

If one doesn't want to have internet connection and still want to play the games, there is always the consoles to fall to. But like you said, PC games are being bound to the internet connection as we speak, and for good.

I do have Internet Access on both computers, but as I've stated many times I'd prefer to keep one PC for games and modding and the other for the Internet! Steam is a great idea don't get me wrong, I just feel that it's a bit too soon for that kind of platform, games should be instant install and if I want any updates I just hop on fileshack or whatever..

so this game, I think they should give it away for free, considering HL2 was such a letdown.

I'd never rate HL2 90+, considering that it was so short and boring, even on hard.

Only real fun place was Ravenholm and playing B-Ball with dawg.

And that it got released a year late compared to what Valve said, should atleast down it with 20%.
