mawibse Posted April 30, 2004 Author Report Posted April 30, 2004 friechamp those are in splinter cell, in the movie theater.. unreal 2k3 tech Yeah but it does not project what the projector is projecting onto the character, that’s UnrealEngine 3 projection stuff.... projectification, k... . In conclusion either the person who took those pics has a low-end computer I'm most certain they are, which is why I say they where odd for promo stuff since promo usually has photoshoped tweak hires "turn everything on and then some" pics. I would bash you fken idiots lol... so delicate with you’re vocabulary, per usual... I don't expect the actual game to be nearly as polished as the demos valve has been showing up untill this point. Actually I’m expecting a lot more polish then that or I’ll be disappointed. I think that maintaining backward compatibility is one major hurdle for Source, since you can’t really do the really wicked graphical stuff…. (think shadows/lightning) But it has one tech that IMHO, if implemented correctly, kicks everything else’s ass; advanced facial animations. Yeah I know what you’re thinking, “who gives a ****?!?” but that’s really major for me. Quote
skdr Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 I like how Half-Life 2 looks. Its not full of DX9 superuber effects and shining walls ruining the whole scene. I like the style of HL2, it looks realistic and not cartoonish or ruined with overused effects. /me likes Quote
Absolut Vodka Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 The atmosphere of HL2 reminds me alot of how I imagined the settings in 1984 to be. Quote

zaphod Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 you have to understand that valve spent literally years on those individual demo maps. The maps that they have had to put together at the end here for the actual game are not going to be as shiny and polished as those. Quote
FrieChamp Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 Sounds like Zaphod is relieved there is evidence now that not every HL2 map is looking far sexier than his creations for the same engine Quote
zaphod Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 pffft, I would nver be jealous of the amout of time and energy valve got to put into it's demos and then have it compared directly to bloodlines which has had 1/4 the time, 1/4 the amount of devs, and 4x more content than hl2. But those are the breaks, nobody will consider that when looking at both games but thats allright. becuase I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and dog-gonnit . . people like me! Quote

Keep on rocking in the free world. And I know what you mean, many HL1 maps were put together 'functionally', with gameplay put first. I expect quite a few HL2 maps to be like this, but obviously looking better than HL1 Quote
Ewok Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 I don't know what it is with this infatuation with FarCry. Comparing a game that's already out to the limited screens for something yet to be released. And I hope that screen isn't supposed to impress anyone. It's simple with bump mapping on the walls. The only thing that really makes it look kinda good is the lighting. In which you pick any arb picture to compare it too. That's unfair. I've seen other Half-Life 2 shots that own FarCry. Not to mention the talent behind Half-Life 2 as far as texture artists, modellers I think kill FarCry's cartoony attempts. Half-Life 2 is still the most realistic looking game out there in my opinion. I just love the lighting and sharp appearence, everything looks crisp. Another thing is this, "Looks blocky". I laugh at those remarks, what do you want. Go take a walk in your neighbourhood or in the city for that matter. You'll find most buildings are square / retanglular. It's realistic. Not every place you go in the world is going to have stunning, striking architecture. Remember, this is based off Europe. And pulls the look off well. And even if some other engine happened to be better than Source by a long mile, Half-Life 2 as a game is going to rock and you all know it. And DD was talking about the water, and it isn't similar to Half-Life 1's in any way. - Ewok Quote
-Stratesiz- Posted May 1, 2004 Report Posted May 1, 2004 By blocky I meant the odd cliffs at the grave yard and at the harbor area seen in some other HL2 pics and the shadows casted from certain objects. I don't expect houses and structures to be all round and curvy but definately not as plain as the second picture indicates. Since the cliffs are blocky I will assume that they haven't implemented any powerful methods for making terrain or round structures. I never said the water looks like the water found it HL1 but it still looks repeating itself over and over again as it was a 256 x 256 texture. Hopefully these are things that are not seen on higher settings. Don't get me wrong. I expect HL2 to be great but after seing all these pictures I would have expected the engine to handle a greater load of detail instead of settling for all these compromises that resemble the ones used in HL1. I just feel disappointed. Then again Valve tends to show unfinished areas on the lowest detail level and slap outdated pictures of things on the box that aren't in the actual game. Quote
MrH2o Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Well i didnt see you guy complained when the water looked like this (wich it prolly still does) All i say is that you guys gonna eat your words when HL2 is finally out. Quote
