mawibse Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 They are kinda odd for promo shots though, and no, they are not from the stolen alpha. http://www.aixgaming.com/ Quote
FrieChamp Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Is this a projector in the back? http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-03.jpg Quote
mawibse Posted April 29, 2004 Author Report Posted April 29, 2004 A large monitor transmiting propaganda I think. Quote
FrieChamp Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Imagine a light source which displays an image on a wall or the like and which casts a shadow of you when you step into the beam, like a proejctor. That would be awesome Quote
mawibse Posted April 29, 2004 Author Report Posted April 29, 2004 Sorry but that sounds like UnrealEngine 3 stuff to me, and thats not going to happen for another year, at least. Quote
OL Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 friechamp those are in splinter cell, in the movie theater.. unreal 2k3 tech Quote
zaphod Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 no projector stuff like that in hl2 . . . thats the render-to-texture camera, like they showed in the demo before. Quote
FrieChamp Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 friechamp those are in splinter cell, in the movie theater.. unreal 2k3 tech Oh didn't know Quote
-Stratesiz- Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 hmmmz... I'm not impressed... at all, after all HL2 was supposed to be like the second coming of Jesus. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-01.jpg First pic looks ok. Not very impressive though. Visible areas are a far cry from Far Cry. Buildings have extremely plain brushwork, for example the one to the right with the rooftop à la HL1 and the door as a part of the wall texture. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-04.jpg The water looks ugly and extremely repetitive compared to Far Cry. The textures are blury, boring and undetailed. Brushwork is repetitive, overly simple and blocky. Why isn't there any anti-aliasing? http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-02.jpg There's that repetitive water again and textures that seem to be just as detailed as in HL1. Very plain areas in general. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-07.jpg Very low poly and blury textures. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-08.jpg Once again the cliffs look awful, just extremely unrealistic and blocky. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-09.jpg This pic might as well be from HL1. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-05.jpg Looks cool but rather nasty due to the lack of anti-aliasing. Surfaces are once more very blury. Heck, even the gun looks undetailed. In conclusion either the person who took those pics has a low-end computer or HL2 looks just extremely outdated. Even though the textures and stuff could be of higher quality the detail is still nothing close to modern standards. Let's just hope it plays well though. Quote
jfas Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 seems like you are nit pickying a whole bunch, some stuff looks bad like the anti aliasing, but in general they all look pretty good. i have a bigger gripe with the contrast in the way things are rendered, if thats even what it is, like the way the gun models look in the player model's hands, its just not quite right, and in http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-04.jpg the way the grate he is standing on looks like its a {transparent texture and the railing is a model Quote
CrazyMAC Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 much agreed strat im pretty let down by it some of the marines look like sprites withere crazy bright lighting :S im most miffed i hope it looks better moving at E3 the lighting seems crazy 2 next gen egine...i fink not D;~ Quote
DD Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 I would bash you fken idiots for even thinking in the slightest possible way that the graphics compares to hl1, but... oh wait. I guess normal maps, shaders, 1287391823719 of on screen polies, high detail l.o.d npc's, real time dynamic reflecting water looks like hl1. Quote
Izuno Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 meh. still, i'm sure i'll get it the day it comes out and play it straight through till i beat it. maybe these screens don't really do the graphics and the gameplay justice. dunno. i can certainly say there are PC games that have better textures than what's shown here. like i said, a few screens that don't impress everyone aren't gonna deter me from getting this one. Quote
zaphod Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 I don't expect the actual game to be nearly as polished as the demos valve has been showing up untill this point. This is an example of that. However, I'm not really too concerned with how it looks, because thats not the reason I want to play it. Quote
-Stratesiz- Posted April 30, 2004 Report Posted April 30, 2004 Yes that's true. I assume the playability to be of the finest quality and I'm almost 100 percent certain that it will look much better with a DX9 compatible card. However, given that the original HL1 looks ugly compared to its modern maps I am pretty sure that it won't take long to beat HL2's general level of mapping in mere months since the tools are basically the same. It's funny how most multiplayer maps nowadays tend to be more detailed than single player maps. As for 2+96872+6085804 polies and dynamic lighting and stuff I don't see any. The poly level I see in those pics is minimal. Notice how the lamp shadow to the right of the pic below is blocky just like in HL1. The bars with the misaligned texturing don't cast any shadows. See how the ever so original black and white tile floor has some odd bump mapping that doesn't look very realistic. http://www.aixgaming.com/archives/hl2-429-06.jpg Compare that pic to this one with less visible area and less stuff to see: http://media.pc.ign.com/media/482/48238 ... 19879.html Quote
