FrieChamp Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 We should have strict rules, don't act like an idiot outside eot. And keep eot material inside eot. And because of that I'm removing my sig now. Jezpuh = good example Anyway, concerning the original topic of the thread: I like the idea to award talent and exceptional members of the community, but as klein said, this still is meant to be a community in which everyone should feel comfortable and help each other, not boost egos. RD Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 that was what the spotlight gallery was for Quote
Mojo Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 over the coming weeks I will try to think of some good ways to get The Core back up and running Full Steam again. I agree that EOT is wrong adn frankly I don't want it, but if it keeps a shit out of the rest of the forums and IRC, then I guess its necessary (That is why it is down at the bottom of the forums). I agree with Jezpuh that there should be Strict Rules and that is sort of what I have been trying to get at for some time now. Quote
Lurker Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 It's not that there isn't a need or purpose for EOT, it does keep the garbage outside of the other forums, but it's really a catch-22: by having EOT, you're welcoming the content on your forums, and by not having EOT you risk having that content spill into the other forums. Personally, even though I think this impossible due to the forum software, the decision should be left up to the user to completely lock EOT out. For example, when I click "View Posts Since Last Visit" on the homepage, many of the posts are from EOT and these are posts (for the most part) that I have absolutely no desire to even view, let alone read. I think EOT speaks to a greater truth about what Mapcore really is though, a place for mappers to come and "hang out", share their work, and otherwise have fun. Not that there is anything wrong with this, but it's important to cater to your users' interests. I know there is a good portion of the userbase that wouldn't want anything like EOT on Mapcore, but there is another group of members that would likely visit much less if at all if EOT was removed. The situation can be compromised somehow, it's just a matter of getting everyone on the same page and following through in the correct manner. And while we're on the topic, just a word of warning. People like to keep adding new things to try and morph the community into a desired state, but that really isn't a use if you aren't going to follow through on the idea. For example, there are only 6 threads in the Spotlight Gallery forum, and in my opinion you can easily find double that amount of work that deserves to be there. I think a good idea would be to have a submission forum, and current Spotlight Gallery winners would vote on whether the piece of work is good enough for the award. You can go on and on and on and on with ideas about what to do with communities, but the best course of action is to follow through on current ideas and make changes where and when necessary. BTW: If you really wanted to push the boundaries, the mapping community could really use a CGTalk-esque community, where you can upload your maps and screenshots and get great constructive comments on it. In my opinion, a site like that would be invaluable to the gaming community and attract a huge userbase. Quote
von*ferret Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 cg talk has quite the funding. If i'm correct, mikezilla graciously pays for this site out of his pocket. I agree that spotlight should be revamped. Klien and I have wanted to get this place reordered for a while but like mojo says its not a cake walk and takes a lot of time. Most of the more "veteran" people have jobs and dont have a lot of time to spend at this site. Quote
Tequila Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 Call this blaspheme, but I could certainly live without EOT. The 'core needs to smarten up, that's for sure. Quote
Lurker Posted December 11, 2005 Report Posted December 11, 2005 cg talk has quite the funding. If i'm correct, mikezilla graciously pays for this site out of his pocket. Yeah, there would obviously be huge hurdles to overcome, but with a sacrifice in features here or there it wouldn't be too taxing on the owners or community. Most of the more "veteran" people have jobs and dont have a lot of time to spend at this site. I agree, but that's the beauty of communities, if we all pitch in a little, it has a snowball effect. I'm not suggesting that something like CGTalk would be attainable in the near future, small baby steps is always best, but it is good to have a role model to mould your community after. Whether or not you attain their status or number of features is a completely different monster. It all depends on where the people in charge see this site going and how they figure they'll going to get there. If they're cool with how it is now, grand, but if they aren't, it is handy know there are people out there with ideas that can lend a helping hand. Quote
TomWithTheWeather Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 I'm not crazy about a popularity feature. Spotlight seems like a enough. I'm all in favor of dumping EOT myself. It seems to me, it dumbs down the overall quality of Mapcore as a respectable modding resource site. I love the fact that so many talented people post here, but I hate seeing all that tainted by the EOT section. At the same time, EOT makes me giggle every now and then. Quote
von*ferret Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 how does a sacrifice in features help mikezilla afford more money to spend on the site? We dont need to have an uploading feature. Yeah it would be cool, but I'd rather keep mapcore "ad" free than have these extra features. Drop EOT and keep that kind of attitude out of the forums. Screw the popularity. Doesn't matter how long you're here. We praise hard work and quality, that alone will get you into the spotlight forum when it is revived. Mapcore in its what? 4 attempts? Has tried to do a large community effort. It rarely works. So everyone "pitching in" may or may not have a large impact. I'm curious as to what you want everyone to "pitch" in for? We have a good number of admins who keep constant watch. When the time that the frontpage is fixed and the spotlight forum is revived we'll have the dedicated mod's to keep it vibrant. Not saying a community isn't imporatnt, but it is not important to have a large community effort to keep the site afloat. Rather have a large community effort to work on their projects and keep the site alive with content. My 50 cents. Quote
ReNo Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 I've never posted in EOT and ain't about to start now - I've no qualms with seeing it go, but at the same time it being there doesn't bother me. Quote
insta Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 As long as the EOT stuff stays there, then it isnt a problem. But didn't Mojo decree that the eot sigs should be turned off in the other forums? That didn't go over too well. Quote
theiggsta Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 I spoke with Mike before about revamping the site and personally rewriting the forums because I need the portfolio work. Only reason I haven't gotten anything started is because of my part-time contract and the fact I am moving at the end of the year, so it won't be until after the new year that I can have anything started for the site. Oh yeah, some show of maturity would probably help this community a ton in terms of public opinion. A little site reorganization helps, but nicer, more helpful people goes a longer way. Even if you cannot help, being more mature is helpful. My hats off to Kedhrin for posting and shame on the EOT crew destroying the thread. Quote
Fletch Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 This is a free service provided to you without your e-mails being sent to a marketing firm or pop up ads in your face every 5 seconds. Cope. And if you really hate EOT so much, I have three suggestions for you. 1) Stop posting there 2) Stop using thsoe ugly EOT signatures 3) Stop paying attention to it Quote
