Guest John Kerry Posted April 21, 2004 Report Posted April 21, 2004 one word for this guy.... OWNED! Quote
Mojo Posted April 21, 2004 Report Posted April 21, 2004 one word for this guy.... OWNED! More like Old. Seen the video a while ago. And MrH2o I wouldn't really be linking files that come from sites affiliated with SA (Something Awful) and linking to movies that are on sites that are not your own. Taking other people's bandwidth is just not cool (leeching images from other places, linking to large files on people's servers that aren't your own*, etc) Its not that I don't like SA, I am infact a great advocate of it, but its more the fact I have seen first hand what people do to image leechers and the like during my times at SA, so this is just a word to the wise. Plus Stealing is stealing. I think I might add this to the rules somewhere after a chat with mikey * - Gamespy and other major Download Centers are ok since that is what they are there for. But people frown on people that they don't know using up their bandwidth. Quote
MrH2o Posted April 21, 2004 Author Report Posted April 21, 2004 WHAT ? Sorry to break it to you buts thats bs, internet is made for to be used, and if you dont wont otherpeople to see your files, then dont upload it to a public adress then, imean wft, we had a leaked video in our topic awhile ago. Mojo Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 WHAT ? Sorry to break it to you buts thats bs, internet is made for to be used, and if you dont wont otherpeople to see your files, then dont upload it to a public adress then, imean wft, we had a leaked video in our topic awhile ago. The internet was made to host your own files, not host your files so millions of others can look at the for free. That is way Porn Sites (most of them) charge money for content. There are some people that allow people to freely look at their pictures and such and have these open directories. But when you get thousands upon thousands of people downloading files from your site (causing you lots of money in going over your limit of bandwidth), then its a real pain in the ass. I used to keep my site upon to teh public, meaning anyone could go into the Downloads Directory at http://www.theposse.org and could just watch any video they wanted. Until recently, when I began putting up some 20-40MB videos (mainly for my friends and the people of Mapcore), things began to get out of hand. Links to my website would appear in Greek and Russian Gaming sites, each site causing about 50-100 downloads, sometimes even more. This ends up being a few Gigs of transfer, which in the long run causes my site to run out of its alloted monthly Transfer. Since we run a few sites off this 100GB, running out of transfer means lots of sites stop working. An Example of this is this. An Internet site represents a car and monthly transfer equals gas/petrol in the car. The "car" uses the "gas" to get from Point A (The Beginning of the Month) to Point B (The End of the Month). Luckily for the "car," it has enough "gas" to make it from point A to B, enough to even have some left over. When you start talking this car's gas (stealing bandwidth), you are not allowing the "car" to get to its destination. If you remember the sand video from a long long time ago - http://www.theposse.org/webalizer/usage_200311.html - that little video ran us close to 1/3 our total bandwidth for one month with aobut 8000 hits. The link was on so many god damn sites that we finally said enough to leeching and imposed strict rules on our server. As you can see when that video was up, we were averaging about 7GB a day during that period. With the new messures in place we now go through about 10GB per month (mainly since have no big files going through right now). I am not going to discuss this further since right now the link you posted is only 2MB. But when you get 10 people showing that link to 10 friends who show it to 10 more friends, that is 1000 people that have watched the file, or about 2GB. One Last Example: Places like Fileplanet and FileShack, are like Buses and are open to the public. Anyone can use their service for free and its not stealing. This is because they have ads and shit that you have to watch through before accessing their content, so they get paid no matter what. When you post their content outside of their site (like I have seen in the BiA threads), then that is stealing since the site is not making any money on the content being access (Of course this is partially their fault for not guarding their files to not be accessed outside of their site). But private sites, are more like personal cars and trucks. You just don't want strangers getting in your car and driving around the country without your permission (Yes, as i said before there are some people that want you to use their content without their permission and I have no quarrel with that). I just don't want Mapcore to be know as a bunch of carjackers that don't refuel the car when they are finished with it. Quote
Thrik Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I have to agree with Mojo. A perfect example is people who pay monthly for their webspace and bandwidth. If I put a file on there and posted it in #mapcore then I'd be prepared for everyone in there to download it and whatever bandwidth loss that may result in, but I would not be happy if then about 4 people #mapcore then started spamming it in other channels, posting it on forums, on their blog sites and god knows what else without first mirroring it. My bandwidth would be used up and my host would literally cut my site off until the end of the month. So yeah, when you start taking large links without permission you can actually start wasting people's money, which is why people tend to get a little pissed off about it. I personally just adopt a procedure of looking through my logs, and if somewhere is heavily leeching my bandwidth I'll replace the link in question with a gigantic goatse.cx picture or something. That usually stops them. Quote
spine Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 Right, It's true what u'r saying Mojo and I respect it, but must say that if u put something out on the net you must suspect that someone might leach it off you. I mean like parking your car on a huge supermarked lot without locking it...what would the insuring companies think of that then... hmm Quote
Mojo Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 exactly thirk and spine. I know people leech and therefore check my logs everyday to find out what gets through. Its a fact of life that people leech and there is nothing I can do to stop them. I just want Mapcore to have a more mature and respectable feeling by not leeching from other people. Quote
MrH2o Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 I understand your point of view, but i disagree, and honestly how fun would it be if nonone posted any links ? and this isnt more stealing then the warez many people download and use in this channel. Quote
