Taylor Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 I never said realism couldn't be fun at all, just most of the single player realism games I've played are more luck-fests and/or giant scripted sequences filled with random death. Also: I can't even find that quote. Quote
mawibse Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Taylor here is a quote from the post that DD commented on they're all ready to try and follow in CS's footsteps by making it the most accurate simulation of real life ever and fixing all of CS's problems! ...and failing to realise CS is popular mainly because of its unrealistic traits. Well to me it sounds like you're saying it's a bad idea to think that popularity comes from realism? Which is kinda true, but I think that the more you can relate to what you're playing the more immersed you can be. And to me immersion in a game is a good thing. Quote
coldblooded Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Oh my... I love ww2 games. A pity that the theme is about "ze americans" :/ (God damnit, I'd like to see a british paratrooper game) Quote
DD Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 From the BIA press release: "With its breakthrough squad-based combat mechanism and unprecedented realism" "blown away by the immersive and realistic combat" Ay Taylor. You speak the truth. REAL != FUN. Read any magazine, book, or talk to anyone who knows about game design, not even a lot about game design, they'll tell you that REAL isn't FUN. Guess BIA is heading in the wrong direction if you ask Taylor, DD and The_Postman.... On the other hand, if you ask me... You misunderstood me. I forgive you, you're after all, a dumbass. Complete realism != FUN. Take a look at a game that tried for the extreme, Trespassor. I'm not going to comment on BIA because I'm legally not allowed to, but I'm very happy with it at this point, I wouldn't change many game design decisions. Quote
mawibse Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Complete realism != FUN. Oh sure, thats what you meant, how convenient. As if anyone would think "Complete realism" would be fun. but I'm very happy with it at this point, I wouldn't change many game design decisions. Thank god, you would probobly remove ironsights and increase player movement speed. In fact I suspect you thinkt that the most "fun" WWII game would be a "Serious Sam does D-Day on steriods"... hmmm there might be something to that, must contact the Croteam. Quote
mikezilla Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 hmmm what an odd conversation we're having perhaps I should chime in and clear a few things up. First of all, Taylor is right about counter strike. Counterstrike as a game is fun because of its mix of realism and total arcade insanity... I wouldn't change a damn thing about that game and that's why I don't play any of the other realistic tactical shooters... because they're far too realistic. As far as BiA goes (and please don't argue with DD about this given his relative infancy with the project) realism is something we're using to tell a story. For example, some games make a bunch of things realistic for the sake of being so, but don't balance the game around it... like bleeding to death or breaking your leg or having to hold your breath underwater... yadda yadda yadda. If you add in gameplay mechanics you have to balance them out in the gameplay or you have a shitty game... With BiA we based the gameplay around squads and real guns and people... and I'm sure everyone's like real guns != fun. But they can if done correctly... you have to add nuance so when you pick up a bar as opposed to a thompson... there's a difference that's obvious and useful in terms of gameplay. I'm rambling... the games gonna be fun. Not because we used realism... because it's fun. now lets all have cake. Quote
Guest Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 thank you mik3y, and stop talking in my behalf mawi, because you're wrong. Quote
DD Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 good job me forgetting to login. btw I had nothing to do with the game design decisions in this game, I didn't mean to imply that I did if it appears so Quote
Taylor Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Yeah, I guess it depends on several things. I liked Rainbow Six and that was super realistic, but it was also squad based and tactical: much like BIA is said to be. I guess it's mainly the single player rambo fests I get bored with, becuase being rambo when you can't dodge fire and die super fast is kinda irritating. Also: more <3 less h8. Quote
mikezilla Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 i've said it like 100 times but.. BiA is definitly NOT a rambo shooter. Quote
coldblooded Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Realism in a ww2 game is a must imo. I'm looking forward to it. What engine will the game use? Crytek? Source? Quote
Taylor Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 I know; I'm looking forward to it, despite only having seen 5 screenshots. And me getting excited about a game after only seeing a tiny bit of media typically only happens with Square games (although they then disappoint and cause me to shake my fist at the sky cursing God (who may, or may not, exist)). mawibse Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 My apologies for "trolling", just thought it was ironic how someone who previously appeared to think that realism was a bad design decision had to work on something said to have "unprecedented realism". Also DD you’re working for a professional Game company now so you might want to consider you’re vocabulary “dumbass”….. oohh the dejavu! Hoho! Like it ever mattered, right Zilla? Hrrmmm, anywayz… I agree with you all, and I most certainly look forward to this COD Copy… Hehe sorry, couldn’t help myself, aahrr what am I doing? Sorry. Honestly, this looks like a mawibse kind of game and I hope it’s going to be huge! If it comes out like I think it will I'll buy it, thats for sure. Quote
KidDynamite Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 Not a rambo shooter?! *disappointment* It should be like Worms 3D me thinks. i'm looking forward to the realism the game will provide for the most part. Alittle bit of realism is good for kid. Quote
Mazy Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 i thought about something like this a while ago (was more like r6 mixed wiff ww2 tho). If i had the power to make a game it should (have) be(en) like this. I just hope gearbox dont mess it up, i bet its alot easier to mess up doing a realistic game than ur average shooter Quote
