Sage Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Hey, first post so idk if this is how I'm supposed to use the site but we'll see: I'm currently making a multiplayer fps based on the concept of Titanfall 2's mission "Effect and Cause" with similar movement (just a multiplayer experience) I can handle the environment decoration and design process, but I have literally no clue where to start with level design. I have tried and scrapped so many ideas because none are viable and I don't know where to start with something like this. If any of you have ideas of ways to approach creating a multiplayer map layout, have good resource suggestions, or just anything that can possibly help me to get started, that would be amazing <3 Quote
VIOLATION Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 If you're up for a long read I'd check out this huge level design writeup There's a lot of good material in there to reference Frimozz 1 Quote
Human Doctor Posted December 29, 2023 Report Posted December 29, 2023 (edited) You have to make bad levels and not mind that they're bad and play the bad levels until you start to tell apart the good from the bad and the interesting from the boring. So don't expect to make a good level from the get-go. Reframe the problem from *making good levels for my game* to *finding the fun*. And don't do any decoration, that will only make it harder to do this soul-searching (it's like how having a girlfriend makes it harder to make drastic changes to your life and take risks because you have a life together). And if you're struggling to come up with ideas, and don't know where to begin, which is how I feel when I try to solve some problem in some domain where I have little to no experience in, maybe just copy levels from an existing game that you like and play it and see what works and what doesn't.
