Minos Posted August 31, 2005 Author Report Posted August 31, 2005 Man I FUCKING hate this country. And I mean that. It isn't very common here to get into a college through your portfolio (unless it's an arts specific college), they always want you to study useless stuff to succeed in some crappy exams. Ok, I emailed the coordinator of the course I want telling her that I can't afford a course like that (it's REALLY expensive) but I ain't poor enough to try one of their financial support for poor people (you have to be really poor to get one of those). Wrote a fucking huge email explaining my situation and stuff and then she replies me: "Thiago, you should go talk with the secretary. Yours sincerely, Nara" /me dies in pain Quote
Hipshot Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Sweden + education + economy = ownage. Everything is more or less free. Education in sweden is free, you need to pay for housing and material such as book and pencils. Quote
patriot Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 The so called 'next' button isn't too easy to see. And the popups are small until the image is loaded in Opera. Other than that great site & great work! Quote

We have free colleges as well, but since the government doesn't give a shit teachers are always on strike. There isnt much investment. The so called 'next' button isn't too easy to see. Yeah I tried to make it like the grey buttons but I couldnt make it to look right on both IE and firefox Quote
-Stratesiz- Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Lovely stuff sir~ I see a future game designer in ya for sure! Quote
Zacker Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 Yep, level design, models and textures all seem to be really well made! Quote
Skjalg Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 minotauro, maybe you should just apply for a state-college or something and try to work yourself into some mod thats gonna make it for sure. + Once per week apply to a different game company over and over again 'till you get a job. Dont let this thing get to you. All the game designers ive asked have told me that education doesnt really count. its your portfolio! Just do more work and im sure someone like UBISOFT *cough* will hire you Quote
Minos Posted September 1, 2005 Author Report Posted September 1, 2005 Yeah I know that a portfolio > education but I really want to go to the college, I'm not sure if I wanna work on games all my life so if I go for a industrial design degree I can work on either games, visual creation, TV, and maybe even special effects for movies. Also, you can't get a work visa without a degree (except motherfucking lucky kleinluka). Quote
skdr Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 I dont agree with "portfolio > education" thingy. Of course if you're mad talented and have very good chances to get job without education, that's cool but for me education is VERY important when thinking future jobs etc. It's not like a school where you learn things to get really good with the tools. It's not only that, its more than that. General knowledge of the stuff, people, marketing, history etc. That's why I applied to school. That's why I want to learn things. No matter how good (or bad) I am. Quote
Hipshot Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 True. A good education, in economics, history, society, nature, those areas could really generate way better jobs then a regular mapping job could, this isnt the 90's any more, all good ideas are already made in the game communitys, now there's just regular jobs with normal pay. And you need some sort of work experience. Quote
NRG Posted September 2, 2005 Report Posted September 2, 2005 I agree with my friend Klein here.. In an industry like ours (game development), the focus is more on talent than on a piece of paper with the words 'diploma' written on it. Some companies might want programmers to show some form of diploma, but not everyone (the mighty Carmack himself is self taught)! Klein is a perfect example. I have been working with this guy for many months now, and he is a very talented artist. Ubi hired him on his past experience and talent combined. I know of some people who have simply finished high school and went straight into the game industry simply because they are talented. That's not to say that getting a degree is a waste of time. But what I am saying is that in certain industries, a degree is not a a total necessity. The game industry is one of those. But thankfully, many other industries do require some form of diploma, degree, etc.. Just imagine: You are drowsy on the hospital bed, and a doctor and a nusre are hovering over you. As they prepare for surgery.. Nurse: So.. doctor.. You must be new here.. Haven't seen you here before. Doctor: Yep. Just started yesterday! Nurse: Which med school did you go to? Doctor: Med school? *laughs* I didn't attend any med school.. I got hired simply by my passion to help people.. now if you would kindly hand me the hack saw and sledge hammer, we can get this thing underway.... *fade out* Cheers, NRG Quote
