An even more troublesome question arises: why would somebody want to steal such maps?

I've personally given out any/all of my HL source files to whoever wants them. I'm well enough known (at least in TFC circles) that anybody trying to rip me off would soon be caught out, so it's hardly a concern. Has anybody truthfully ever got away with stealing someone's (decent) work and claiming it as their own? As long as the work was in the public domain to start with, I can't see how it could be successfully done.

This reminds me of someone who rebuild a part from Mazy's de_countdown. He didn't get away with it though.
