zeOx Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 I was just wondering if any of you had some tips, or rules even, when you are creating a map for CS? every time I try to make a map, it just turns out to have a horrible layout, and that results in me never finishing a map. Quote
TomWithTheWeather Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 Draw it out on paper first that way it's easier to plan and erase and redraw. Play through it in your mind as you draw. Try to imagine the gameplay mechanics of certain areas. DONT focus on theme/art. Make something that looks absolutely ugly but plays like a dream. Once it plays good, then make it look good. Quote

zeOx Posted August 26, 2005 Author Report Posted August 26, 2005 thanks fritz, that was extremely helpful! Quote
Grin Posted August 26, 2005 Report Posted August 26, 2005 If you're building a bomb map, just make the positions of spawns and bombsites form a cross like +. Put the spawns left and right and bomb sites up and down, most official de_maps with a working layout have this. Most that don't work have something else. Quote
ginsengavenger Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 http://www.slothy.com/composite/MP_101.doc Good link, CompoSITe is working at Infinity Ward now on their next big game Quote
JynxDaddy Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 A basic Figure 8 in the layout is good. It's what Dust 1 and 2 have. and I saved some advice from CrackerJack for DM maps, but it might be of use to you. (Crackerjack): height variation (Crackerjack): every room/hallway should have 3 ways out * DaNose slaps Cyberjunkie around a bit with a large trout (Crackerjack): and weapon placement What I hear everywhere, the figure 8, and cross thing like grin said. A basic shape or pattern that is symmetrical for balance. I hope that helps. Quote
ReNo Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 Pity CJ didn't take his own advice on board when making dm_ominous Only joking cj, don't hit me!!! You know its true though Quote
Campaignjunkie Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 Pity CJ didn't take his own advice on board when making dm_ominous Ooohhh, ouch! Are you going to take that from him, Crackerjack? Err, I hear testing the timing with bots is a good idea too, making sure that the 2 teams clash at interesting areas. Quote
zeOx Posted August 27, 2005 Author Report Posted August 27, 2005 thanks alot guys! expect some WIP shots soon, since I've actually gotten a layout that I'm confident with this time, thanks to you Quote

Evert Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 wtf? Yeah figure 8, or several 'rings' that connects larger rings are a good "rule". Quote
