ginsengavenger Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Well, Steam preloads it for everybody. I don't recall if the dvd edition is supposed to enable you to play DoD:S - I imagine it'll say so on the box if so. If Steam doesn't think so then you'll have to buy it. It's worth $20 easily IMO. jfas Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 i think dod:s loooks damn dope, but my computer isnt good enough to play it, i just have to wait till my new one gets repaired ): but i definetly think its a big step in the right direction Quote
KoKo5oVaR Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 hey, i've bought it, and damn, it's pretty good. Downloaded in 40 minutes it's clean, compact, polished at the corners and all ^^, but for me it's not really the ol' dod at all, there s plenty changes in fact, in particular the firerate of the SMGs, and it's a nest of automatics now, since the KAR98 is not a railgun at all. And omai, and the machineguns, they are terrible killing machines and it seems that nobody uses them, you can put one on almost something everywhere really quickly, and the firerate, especially for the mg42, is devastating. What else, oh yeah the ironsights, i find them kinda sucked, too slow, too big, and a too powerfull fov, not comfortable as these in Callofduty, and there's no bayonnet on the rifles (onoes). Maps are badass, there's a bunch of small paths between the houses and plenty of malicious hide places. But well, i've desactivated the hdr (too laggy) and the bloom (too blinding), but maps looks nice like this as well Quote
mike-0 Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 note that i dont have the game yet. koko, all the stuff you mentioned seems easily fixable and i bet the gameplay does get better throughout small updates. people will whine and whine on the steam forums, and i assume that they will do something. the bloom and hdr isn't really anything new to me, i played that r8 mod that used bloom and hdr in half life 2. it looks really good, but sometimes i think the bloom looks artificial. it's still awesome looking, though. Skybex Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 I was playing it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Maps look really nice (only 4 of them though ) Didnt really play the first one though so i cant compare between the two. Quote
|FRITZ| Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 I thought they used hdr smartly. It didn't feel it was overly powerful, or blinding. Thats stretching it. It just adds more of that cinetmatic quality you find in war movies. I'm a big fan of hdr now. Quote
ginsengavenger Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 I feel the same way on most of those points KoKo. The ironsights behave totally differently from what I'm used to in CoD, but they have a precise feel to them that you don't get elsewhere. I'm just regarding them as a pseudo-scope, not for constant use and switching like in CoD. Which is kind of a shame because I'm so used to using them constantly. And I really miss having a bayonet or at least being able to melee with the stock. Quote
Algor Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 The maps look pretty good, but I can't stand a lot of the weapon models and firing stuff. Something about the gameplay bugs me quite a bit, maybe it is feedback from the way the guns sound and how accurate / powerful they are, but it just feels bad. Maybe that's what hundreds of hours of BiA will do to you. Ironsights on the weapons feels pretty odd also, maybe it's a combination of slow movement speed and server lag or something. Not having ironsights on weapons that aren't rifles put me off a bit too. Quote
ginsengavenger Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 Maybe that's what hundreds of hours of BiA will do to you. that'll do the trick i think BiA just feels completely different from any other shooter to me. Quote
Izuno Posted September 27, 2005 Report Posted September 27, 2005 overall I am impressed, but I can see why a lot of the comments were made about the feel and ironsights etc. I think it will improve over time and I'm happy it is at least playable on it's first day. In the past, DoD on HL1 often had bad lag issues on the first couple of days after release, so I can deal with performance issues right now. I also just went from 6800u to X800pro and it runs SOOO much better with no audio locks on my AMD core. So i'm lovin it. Hopefully more official maps will roll out...but it will take time. At the DoD forums i have asked the other mapping forum moderators to help get some DoD:S specific mapping guides out with real info...hopefully the DoD:S SDK will come out soon with an example .RMF from one of the first 4 official maps. That way the custom map community might get a kickstart. We'll see how it goes. I urge everyone with HL2 to give it a shot. Cheers Quote

mike-0 Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 if you read the DOD forums, everyone is complaining about the messed up things like no melee, lame ironsights, bad shot cone spread etc, so im guessing it will be fixed. they cant ignore 99% of the people who post on their forums. DanielAragon Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 the one thing i cant stand is how in-game people will cry about how they "wasted 2 years"...bullshit, within 2 or 3 months itll be even sweeter that it is now. granted there are a few foul ups here and there but my god it was released monday, not january! lookin forward to upgrading my good ol 9800 pro. it has served me well but hey, gotta move up Quote
Section_Ei8ht Posted September 28, 2005 Report Posted September 28, 2005 My only complaint is that the hand looks way too big on all the gun models. Other than that, good stuff. Quote
