NRG Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Hello all. I ran across this site that some people might find useful. Alot of articles that talk about the many different aspects of texturing. I don't know if anyone posetd this URL already. If so, my apologies.. I'm not too familiar with what has been posted here in the past. In any case, feel free to have a look. It might be worth glancing at. http://leigh.cgcommunity.com/tutorials.htm Cheers, NRG Quote
st0lve Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Well I don't wanna learn how to do better photo textures, I wanna learn to do them by hand! D: Quote
NRG Posted August 16, 2005 Author Report Posted August 16, 2005 No it isn't my site, Nexus.. I just ran across this when searching for something. st0lve, I guess using photo textures versus hand painted boils down to personal preference. These days, alot of people are turning to photos as a base on which to build on (now I can see the benifits of digital SLR cameras, or simply digital cameras in general). It all boils down to what you are trying to achieve. If its more toward realistic, then photo manipulation is definately the way to go. Too time consuming to try and pump out realistic textures, especially when you are doing it for a living and time is of the essence. I like doing both personally (hand painted and photo based ones). Both styles have their merits I suppose Either way, just thought I'd pass the site along, just in case it interests whomever. Cheers, NRG Quote
PhilipK Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Not a too shabby site. Eyed through an article that went through a lot of stuff considering different shader styles and what you can do with em etc. And stolve. to make a tutorial on howto actually draw a texture (if you would want 100% handmade cartoonish styles) would be extremly hard because: Everyone have their own style of drawing (more or less). To draw is something you have to practise over and over and over again to get better. I don't believe in tutorials for this matter to be honest. You can't be told which way is RIGHT to draw. However a tutorial on tools and techniques (to some extent) is a different story. Well that's my 4 cents anyway Quote
DaanO Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 I agree BUT tutorials on drawing can make your progress go faster Quote
st0lve Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 true enough blaz, but I wasn't thinking 100% hand made, more like "how to" on getting the stuff to look realistic etc. Quote
Pericolos0 Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 if i'm going to hand paint textures i'm not even gonna try making my stuff look realistic, just make it look really sweet Quote
DaanO Posted August 17, 2005 Report Posted August 17, 2005 A coherent texture set if more important than photo realism anyway, i guess. Quote
Captain P Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 I don't even like photorealism so much. I found HL2's texture library much less usefull than HL's, for example. Probably less inspiring for me, or more restricting me to a realistic style. Quote
Vinny Testaverde Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 that tutorial is more for 3D animation not game textures... Still a good read though Quote
Eliot Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 that tutorial is more for 3D animation not game textures... Still a good read though Quote
NRG Posted August 18, 2005 Author Report Posted August 18, 2005 JonM, I beg to differ... In the link called Articles on the top menu, there is a link near the top of the page called Photorealistic Texturing for Dummies... (its a pdf file format instead of the traditional HTML one when you click on it). In this pdf, the guy goes through the explainations with regards to elements of shaders such as diffuse, specular, etc... etc.. If you scroll down futher, he illustrates what UV mapping is (im sure this is all pretty common knowledge for most part). So I think that this article has everything to do with gaming and textures. Perhaps you missed this specific file? In either case, you are correct... it is a good read. Cheers, NRG Quote
