Kosmo Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 I'm a huge fan of movie music, nope, not soundtracks as we know them right now, they are just collections of crappy songs by crappy modern artists, I'm talking about Lalo Schifrin, Bob James, Ennio Morricone and so on. Songs that are created for the movie to fill certain place and create a mood. If you haven't already heard Ennio Morricones Fistful of Dollars soundtrack or Lalo Schifrins original Mission Impossible and Dirty Harry soundtracks I advice you to pick them up. Movie music at it's best. Quote
seppe Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Kill bill soundtrack has some nice songs too Quote
Mojo Posted July 21, 2005 Author Report Posted July 21, 2005 If we're talking recently though, I'd say the Batman Begins soundtrack is some really hot stuff. It's very subtle and ambient, and on the first listen it seems a bit lacking, but it's a really awesome piece of work if you listen properly and take it all in. Also, the Mr & Mrs Smith soundtrack is surprisingly listenable! And yeah, the WotW soundtrack is a bit poo. I've never really been a huge fan of John Williams though. I'm more into Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman and John Powell. )) Just let BB and WotW change places and you've got it right. Both had kinda forgettable music and I really wanted strong themes for both of them. Still liked the WotW soundtrack better. once you listen to Batman begins a few times you definately hear that there are themes present. Quote
Thrik Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Aye, indeed. They're hard to pick out on the first listen since it's all so deep, rich in strings, and generally slow paced -- after that though, the beauty of the soundtrack really comes out. It shot from being a "eh.." soundtrack to a ":D" soundtrack, after my first listen. It's definitely not got the fast, striking melodies you hear in various Zimmer soundtracks, but they're there. My favourite track is definitely 06 - Tadarida, incidentally. Quote

So has WotW, but as I said, not as strong as I had hoped (i.e. Jurassic Park theme, Batman '89 theme). Quote
Thrik Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 The difference being that Batman Begins' soundtrack is actually pleasant to listen to. Imo. Quote
Mojo Posted July 22, 2005 Author Report Posted July 22, 2005 listening to Batman Begins right now and I think Antrozous and Nycteris are just awesome tracks, the flow of the beats at the beginning of Nycteris is wicked. I was worried that Zimmer was conducting it since his stuff ends to sound a lot a like, but to hear that Newton Howard composed it made me happy. Quote
Thrik Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 Yeah, it's a good mix. I trust you've heard the Unbreakable soundtrack, incidentally? That's some very good James Newton Howard music along similar lines to Batman Begins. Just not as epic. Quote
Thrik Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 PS: Do you have the "The Interpreter" or "The Peacemaker" soundtracks? Quote
Mojo Posted July 22, 2005 Author Report Posted July 22, 2005 No, No, and No, though I can more than likely get my hands on them Quote
Thrik Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 Definitely listen to the first, and if you can find the last two.. Quote
Alf-Life Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 Yeah, I agree about Begins. I thought the same thing, but changed my mind while playing CS and hearing Track #3 come on... about 2 minutes in the music pumps up bigtime. Great stuff. I thought the Team America stuff was amusingly self-referential until I found out it came from some at Zimmer's stable; that English bloke who's name I forget and could look up but who looks like Gary Oldman. Thrik Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 Harry Gregson Williams, I assume you mean. He's very good, just getting into his stride though imo. I predict very good things coming from him in the future. Quote
Erratic Posted July 23, 2005 Report Posted July 23, 2005 Cliff Martinez is interesting. He's scored a good deal of Soderbergh's films. Solaris in particular. Quote
