I don't get it, how does that UV map work? Why did you only make 1 black tile?

Because he only needed the one black tile, i think while unwrapping he laid all the black tiles on each other, -> less skinning time.

There are a whole load more white tiles, and the white tiles have borders with each other. The black tiles are all seperated from one another - therefore nobody will notice that they use they same texture :)
