Nothing can be done to stop Mark Zuckerberg from pursuing his ambition. What matters is that all this engineering labour goes towards something with real value, rather than being just an instrument for him to grow his empire. Just think of the enormous brain drain that the propaganda industry is responsible for.

If you try to access one of these blocked websites, this plugin would tell you how many times it was tried that day, and total count. For about 3 weeks, I tried to access Facebook 72 times, I still have that number tattooed into my memory. 72 fucking times and I KNEW it was blocked, and still tried to open it. It was one of the best things I could have done, because it opened my mind to other negative habits and addictions I have. Yeah I had a similar experience. Then a couple weeks ago there was this facebook outage for less than a day. On my phone it said I needed to re-authenticate or whatever to log back in to use the app. Same in my primary browser that I had normally been using to access facebook from my computer. I never did log in to either again, only able to access facebook in a separate secure browser (i mean probably slightly more secure but whom are we kidding here?). tl;dr: I have cut my facebook time the past few weeks to an average of 2 minutes a day, if that. Life is so much better now. blackdog

Life is so much better now. I'm glad I ended my addiction. Some addictions are good. Depends on what you get out of it. I personally find Instagram to be much more pleasant and less toxic than Facebook. They attract different kinds of people. Most of my friends have moved away from Facebook a long time ago. There are things a platform can do to incentivise quality content. Instagram does that pretty well. I think that's really common ( you know, sans the tripping ) - sadly - but yea same for me, anyway. The worst part is absolutely when you've already decided that you want to cut it out, but your subconscious just doesn't let it go. Any time I'd slightly lose focus the muscle memory just slams down and a new tab is already open. Been ""clean"" for like 5 years now though, I think. I'm sad to say YouTube has largely filled that hole for me, however, but I like to think as long as I keep it to audio-only content I'm no worse off than anyone from the past 70 years who had a radio on while working 43 minutes ago, Human Doctor said: I had a similar experience with books. blackdog
You guys seen The Social Dilemma (and The Great Hack)? There are people even previously employed in these companies that work and advocate to minimise the time spent. Disconnect (2012) was a good film about how people get caught up and the risks of online bullying. As for usage of these networks, as soon as the functions to monitor how much you use certain apps and services was available on my phone, I immediately set Facebook to 20 min a day - which I almost never reach, when I do is mostly because of looking up stuff on Marketplace. But before that I had already started logging off the thing every time I used it, so whenever I compulsively went to it on my computer, I would have to pause, think and most times close the tab. I also had already removed all notifications, Lock Screen, badges etc. Now when I open it I check my notifications and often close after that. It’s hilarious to see how the algorithm is trying to get me interested, notifying me of different things. ~@Human Doctor not sure how you find Instagram less toxic, there’s been plenty of noise about how it’s even more dangerous for kids than Facebook, that the bullying is even worse. They were running an experiment of removing the “like” function, but not sure if it’s gone past that, haven’t used it in ages.
