Dunno how far you are and stuff but :

Ocean looks more like the local pool than an ocean, cant you add waves and "schuim" ? A second layer on top of the water with wave movement and textures might help already

And zeemeeuwe flying over

The stuff is wet, make materials with spec shaders that feel more wet, could also add waterpuddles and other crap at some spots. Its just a flat texture at the moment.

The ship feels empty like said and feels very static, let it live. Particles on the front for the splashing water + a 3rd layer on the water with a V shape like what you get when a ship slides trough the water

Same on the back, particles and those lines in the water.

Could also have some aircraft flying over every now and then. Living world, you need moving shit all over the place, not a static thing.

Waves can't be done in source, wel not that I know off.

The foam would only be visible in spectator mode and I'm not good enough to make something like that :/

hmm seagulls nice idea but since the I'm working on a night & fog setting they don't fit. hl2 has a seagull I believe :-)

One way to do a wave-effect would be to model and animate it, then texture it with the water shader you're currently using. I think that would look really neat.

I could think of various work arounds. You could go for flat waves, just a sheet on top of the water with an animated texture of waves and foam sliding by all the time

Or you could make a moving ^ shaped brush that loops itself and comes sliding by all the time

The brush/mesh would fade out on both sides so you dont sees the edge where the end of the brush meets the water surface

Anything goes

You could also have a big battle raging in the distance. So you can see the outline silhoutes of ships in the distance, black smoke above them and light flashes and distant rumbling all the time. This ship would be on its way to that battlefield then

That way you create a specific atmosphere and emotion of fear of the things that are to come. From the bright happy sun shine on 1 side to the dark hell of war.

Dont make a place with a thing in. Make a situation with specific emotions and atmospheric crap, not a dead thing if possible within time constraints and stuff.

BEST EVR!#@!!! You could even have some explosions in the water near the ship, because they look so cool

lol its cs, not a Day of defeat map :)

The ohio class ships are decommisioned after the gulf war and how would terrorists end up on a ship like this and during a battle.

The briefing for the map says its a training , blue squad plays CT and Red squad plays terrorists, who loses have to pay for beer in the cafetaria :-)

I was thinking to add some island in the 3d sky, does anyone know how a 3d sky effects a budget, i'm pretty high already because the engine sees almost the whole map from any point, only the indoor is seperated with areaportals.

Well duh, why it has to be "realistic" setting? I'd suggest you to make it cool, not placed somewhere on earth with boring setting. Make some cool stuff that attracts player and makes them go "whoa!".

That's what the explosions and stuff are. Makes the setting more interesting and cool.

A 3d sky in itself does not really require anything, it is what you put in it which matters. An island would be cool, a single disp map*4 should not really affect anything.

Ok, but cool things like that can become anoying pretty fast as well :-)

and seeing alot of the crap some servers run I start to doubt players want cool stuff but rather smooth fast maps.

I think the map has the setting and feel and I want it to stay well in budget this time because I got some complaints of to high fps in my other maps :)

Well, the explosion in the water sound like totaly cool with a sound effect could be soooooo cool and adds realisme!

it should a night map, with stars everywhere, then in the distance should be a glowing moon. Then surround your ship in function_smoke_volume (?) to make it look like the ship is moving.

Anything to draw the attention away from the water!

bah been a whole week of compiling, finally have some nice fog and now swap buffers is hamering the budget, back to start.

Trying to get lower fps on another map, deleted alot of models and detail brushes in that area and didn't make a difference, its to get frustrated and i would almost want to forget it all with another 3 years of Dark Age of Camelot, been a year since it quit that now :-)
